Together, we raise awareness of the challenges that hinder our progress toward eliminating this devastating disease. This year marks several challenges with many shifts in funding, personnel, and public health efforts. Tuberculosis, once thought to be a thing of the past, is on the rise again-both across the country and right here in New Jersey. A recent outbreak in Kansas City resulted in 67 active TB cases, 2 deaths and 79 latent cases. This has public health experts raising concern. Dr. Alfred Lardizabal, Executive Director of the Global Tuberculosis Institute at Rutgers University, reminds us that TB is "sneaky"-and its crucial to stay vigilant. On December 31, 2024, the American Thoracic Society (ATS), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the European Respiratory Society (ERS), and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) published “Updates on the Treatment of Drug-Susceptible and Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis: An Official ATS/CDC/ERS/IDSA Clinical Practice Guideline” in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
