Please join us in congratulating BSN senior Ashley Cooke on earning 3rd place for the BSN Student Poster Award at ENRS!

Her poster, “Wide Awake in Delaware: Why Social Determinants Matter for Young Adult Sleep,” highlighted preliminary findings from her honors thesis. Her research found that young adults in Delaware experience poor sleep health, with social determinants of health, such as insurance and employment status, playing a key role in sleep patterns.

Huge congratulations to Dr. Kathleen Brewer-Smyth!

Her book Adverse Childhood Experiences: The Neuroscience of Trauma, Resilience and Healing throughout the Life Course (published by Springer Nature) has earned its 5th award, winning the 2026 Independent Press Award in the medical category.

This impactful work has also been widely recognized, receiving four 2023 American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year Awards, including 1st place in three categories and 3rd place in Consumer Health.

These experiences provided valuable insight into global healthcare systems and expanded students’ perspectives on nursing and health beyond the U.S., while also engaging in cultural immersion experiences such as Italian cooking classes and excursions to Pisa.
