Our sensory processing changes depending on the state of our nervous system. When we’re in “flight or flight,” the sympathetic nervous system kicks in, amplifying external sensory input while reducing focus on internal needs. This means that when we’re dysregulated, our sensory experience becomes more intense, making overload more likely.

Dysregulation in Response to Sensory Overload
When you are in sensory overload, you can’t respond to your environment as well, and that could lead to dangerous consequences; this keeps the nervous system in a heightened fight-or-flight state. This state amplifies sensory input even more, so once sensory overload starts, it tends to keep going unless you do something to stop the cycle. Like getting away from whatever is overwhelming.

Routines are essential for creating stability and conserving mental energy. During the holidays, however, routines often shift due to days off, social gatherings, and new expectations. These changes can make simple tasks feel more draining, as your nervous system works harder to adjust to the unfamiliar.

Routines provide efficiency, helping you navigate daily tasks without expending extra energy. When routines are disrupted, your system has to work harder to manage even basic activities, reducing the capacity available for sensory processing and social interactions. Maintaining as much consistency as possible can help conserve energy and create more bandwidth for sensory-rich holiday environments.

Social interactions can be one of the most energy-intensive parts of holiday gatherings, especially in sensory-rich environments. For neurodivergent adults, social engagement can feel more taxing due to increased sensory processing demands and the need for additional focus to interpret social cues.

Conversations & Sensory Overload
Navigating conversations requires mental and sensory resources, which can quickly become depleted in noisy or crowded spaces. As conversations pile up, the combined social and sensory demands can leave you feeling overstimulated or unable to process and respond comfortably.

Each of your sensory systems can give you clues that sensory overload is approaching. Often, neurodivergent adults learn to ignore or turn off these signals until they become loud and more insistent. As Occupational Therapists, we specialize in helping you understand the unique clues your nervous system provides.

Please join us in welcoming Co-founder and Director along side Shannon here at RCP, Natalie!

Slide 1 : Meet Natalie
🎓 - Doctor of Occupational Therapy
💼 - OT, Co-Founder & Director at RCP
🌟Fun Fact: Natalie has a knack for spotting heart-shaped rocks everywhere she goes.

Q: What inspired you to become an OT?
A: Ages ago, way back when I was teaching, I had a student who desperately needed OT. But there was no funding. No support. No help. I found myself trying to be the OT he needed, creating ways to help him succeed where he belonged - in our classroom. This led me down the rabbit hole and by year two of teaching, I knew I had to become the OT he (and others like him) needed.

Q: What’s your favorite part about working with neurodivergent adults?
A: Adulting is hard. Seriously, let’s be real: Adulting feels like too much almost all of the time. After years of working with kids, I started asking myself, “What happens when these kids grow up?” Turns out, not enough. So I made the shift to adults. My goal? Build an OT clinic to help adults navigate life on their terms, not society’s unrealistic bs expectations.

Q: What can people find you doing at RCP?
A: A little bit of everything! You’ll find me working directly with clients and managing all the details behind the scenes that come with running a clinic and supporting both our clients and clinicians. Basically, I’m an OT who wears all the hats.

Q: What’s one of your biggest sensory challenges, and how do you handle it?
A: I’m an HSP, so things like sounds, bright lights, and crowded spaces absolutely wreck me. My strategy? Avoid them at all costs. 😂 But seriously, when I can’t avoid them, I prioritize plenty of downtime to recover. Like, a lot of downtime.

Q: Tell us about your favorite leisure occupations.
A: Nature is where I feel most at peace. Whether I’m collecting rocks, paddle boarding, skiing, hiking, or just sitting by the ocean, being surrounded by trees, mountains, or waves always feels like home. 🌲🏔️🌊

Thanks for meeting Natalie!
