February is Black History Month, and 2026 marks 100 years of national Black history commemorations. This centennial celebrates the visionaries who advance equality and preserve the history of Black Americans, and the moments that continue to shape progress today. As we celebrate, learn some key historical moments that advance our world.

1964: The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaws discrimination and reshapes civil rights protections nationwide.

1968: The Fair Housing Act of 1968 prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing.

1981: Dr. Alexa Canady becomes the first Black woman neurosurgeon in the U.S., advancing excellence and representation in medicine.

2013: The founding of Black Lives Matter reframes global conversations around justice, dignity, and the value of Black lives.

2016: Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture opens in Washington DC, cementing Black history as central to the American story.

We are so grateful to be part of experiences like this.💙Our Avamere at Newberg residents adventured to Tillamook Creamery 🧀and Rockaway Beach, creating memories that many thought they might never make again.

For some, it had been over 18 years since they last saw the ocean. 🌊Watching that joy unfold was unforgettable. From all of us sitting down to eat lunch together, enjoying a scoop of freshly made Tillamook ice cream, wandering through gift shops, riding in the iconic VW buses, and watching the cheese being made, every moment added another layer to a day filled with laughter, wonder, and connection.

For others, it was the fresh saltwater taffy or warm caramel popcorn from a local spot on Rockaway Beach that made them smile just as wide. We created so many memories, ones that will be treasured for a long time to come. 🤍🍿🍦

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! Each January, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring legacy of service and advocacy. A central leader of the American Civil Rights Movement, Dr. King dedicated his life to advancing justice, equality, and unity.

Here are a few important moments from Dr. King’s life:

✅1944: Dr. King enrolled at Morehouse College at 15 years old. He earned his PhD in systematic theology in 1955 at Boston University.
✅1963: He organized the historic March on Washington, a peaceful demonstration of the injustices faced by Black Americans nationwide.
✅1964: Dr. King earned the Nobel Peace Prize for his powerful activism against racism and the movement for equality.
