About h**p.

H**p (Cannabis sativa) is a plant from the Cannabaceae family cultivated primarily for its bast fiber. It is often confused with cannabis varieties that produce ma*****na and hashish. Although all three products—h**p, ma*****na, and hashish—contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound, the variety of cannabis grown for h**p contains only trace amounts of THC compared to those cultivated for ma*****na or hashish.

The h**p plant is a stout, aromatic, erect annual herb. Its slender, cane-like stalks are hollow except at the tip and base. The leaves are compound and palmate, while the flowers are small and greenish-yellow.

H**p originated in Central Asia, with its cultivation for fiber recorded in China as early as 2800 BCE. It spread to Mediterranean countries early in the Christian era and throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. In the 1500s, it was introduced to Chile, and a century later, it reached North America.
