Betsy, an Independent Home Care consumer, shares: "I’m happy I have independent living to help me with my care, I have been so grateful for the help I received, I have to many health elements to even write most of them down. But the main one is my breathing issues, headaches, back pain and standing, seeing at times to read, arriving at my doctor’s appointments, cleaning, food shopping, laundry. I had Covid in January turn around at the end of March the Flu, if I didn’t have help with all this, who to say what could have happened without my Aide assisting me. So I ask for them to think carefully about our care. And on top that the trust with is very hard today, Most of us like myself is depending on the care that is needed. I would just like to stress that thousands and thousands like myself, you may see to make budget cuts, but our health issues won’t be going anywhere. It’s very sad that now we have to fathom the thought, We would have to stress over this matter."
Governor Hochul’s budget proposals include:
Pay Cuts: Cutting pay for personal assistants in NYC, Long Island & Westchester by 12% by removing CDPA from Wage Parity.
Designated Representatives: Eliminating Designated Representatives, which would disqualify certain individuals from receiving CDPA.
Reducing Consumer Direction: Mandating state training for personal assistants and limiting their hours, reducing consumer control and posing risks, especially for those needing high hours.
Reducing Consumer Choice: Giving the Department of Health authority to limit Fiscal Intermediaries, potentially forcing many to close and restricting consumer choice.
Restricted Funding: Reducing funding for individuals needing less than 16 hours per day, rather than adjusting rates regionally and for inflation.
