As we get older, more and more of our cells (especially skin fibroblasts, immune cells, etc.) become senescent, aka: “zombie cells.” Zombie cells don’t die and get cleared away like they should; instead they hang around and secrete inflammatory molecules (called the SASP – senescence-associated secretory phenotype).
