Earlier this week, Christian Plaza, MBA, MSN, PMHNP-BC, FNP-C, and Mark Olsen, were invited to be panelists at Leadership Orange's Health & Human Services session held at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center.

The first panel of the day focused on the rising healthcare costs, chronic disease management, community engagement, the opioid epidemic, and healthcare disparities, all within Orange County. Mr. Olsen was joined by Rose Little RN, BSN, PCMH-CCE, Director of Clinical Partnerships of the Community Health IPA, as co-moderators of the panel.

Mr. Plaza spoke during the next panel. His questions involved discussing the role a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner plays in combating the key factors that contribute to mental health challenges.

We were also excited to have James Thoben, our Undergraduate Intern from Mount Saint Mary CollegeMount Saint Mary College, with us to learn more about the resources Orange County uses to break down social determinants of health.

We want to thank Leadership Orange for inviting our two employees to talk about the healthcare landscape in Orange County!

We would like to welcome our newest intern, James Thoben, to Cross Valley Health & Medicine! James is an undergraduate senior studying Healthcare Management at Mount Saint Mary College. James' passion for improving insurance processing procedures and making daily operations more efficient aligned with our internship program's projects for the fall semester. He was initially studying nursing but transitioned after a professor introduced healthcare administration to him during his sophomore year. When James is not busy studying, he is rooting for the San Francisco 49ers. He also can play the drums and guitar.

We are excited to have James with us this semester and look forward to him growing with us. Applications for seats in our Spring 2024 Internship Program are due December 31st! Please email your resume to cvhmpc@me.com if you are interested in applying.

Cross Valley Health & Medicine congratulates Christian J. Plaza, PMHNP, FNP-C, who completed his Post-Master's Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health from Mount Saint Mary College on May 12th, 2023.

Being part of the college's first program cohort, Plaza had spent the past two years focusing on diagnosing, treating, and managing psychiatric patients across all stages of life. His studies have underscored the vital role of good mental hygiene practices.

Plaza said, "I embrace my new role as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, finding purpose in offering compassionate psychiatric care to our communities. I am now equipped to treat a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, substance use disorders, PTSD, ADHD, and more. I am dedicated to fostering mental wellness and enriching lives through understanding and resilience."

In light of Plaza's achievement, Cross Valley Health & Medicine looks forward to expanding into providing psychiatric health services later this year.

On June 21st 2023, Christian Plaza, PMHNP, FNP-C delivered a 3-hour presentation at Mount Saint Mary College's newly constructed Desmond Center for Community Engagement & Wellness. His presentation was titled "Health Equity Talks: Health Disparities in the LGBTQ+ Community."

The discussion focused on identifying and clarifying the health disparities faced by the + community in Orange County. These contemporary healthcare concerns involved utilizing primary care and preventative medicine lenses to understand the limited access to healthcare this community faces daily.

We thank the Executive Director of the Orange County Government Human Rights Commission, Inaudy Gil, for sponsoring the presentation. We also would like to thank the Executive Director of the Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness, Genesis Ramos, MPA, for providing such a wonderful space to have our presentation in.
