We remain steadfast in our goal of universal access and opportunity for all in the Hudson Valley region. is a locally controlled, nonprofit agency operated by people with disabilities for people with disabilities, offering a wide range of programs and services dedicated to ensuring universal access and opportunity in every aspect of community life. Since 1987, we’ve served as a voice for people with disabilities living in Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Putnam, Sullivan, Rockland, and Westchester Counties. Our efforts are directed to people of all ages having any disability, as well as to families, businesses, agencies, and municipalities. We are committed to the universal elimination of physical and attitudinal barriers, as well as assisting individuals with disabilities to make the transition from system dependency to independence successfully. Since our inception in 1987, Independent Living, Inc. has remained steadfast in our mission to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities. With a comprehensive range of over 35 programs and services, Independent Living, Inc. provides personalized support that empowers individuals to live independently, exercise control over their care decisions, and maintain their autonomy. When an individual contacted our Crisis Call Center after the loss of a parent, they were grieving and facing the fear of homelessness. In the middle of overwhelming loss, they made the courageous decision to reach out for help.

Our ILI Middletown Team responded immediately, connecting them to clinical care, peer support, and housing and employment resources. Within days, a network of services was in place to provide stability and hope.

Compassion and connection matter. When someone reaches out, we are here to respond. ✨

ILI Voices

When a young adult contacted Independent Living, Inc. during a period of financial and emotional instability, they were facing an urgent utility shutoff in their first apartment. With support from an ILI Peer Advocate and Youth Engagement Specialist, immediate housing stability was restored and a path toward self-advocacy and independence began.

Over the following year, the individual built stability and confidence by reestablishing medical coverage, engaging consistently in health care, working toward a high school equivalency diploma, and planning a housing transition to be closer to family support. Their progress reflects the impact of sustained advocacy and the power of building independence step by step. 💪

Our Story

Since 1987, Independent Living, Inc. has served as a common voice for persons with disabilities living in our community. As a freestanding, locally controlled, nonprofit agency operated by people with disabilities, we offer a wide range of programs and services dedicated to ensuring universal access and opportunity in every aspect of community life. Our efforts are directed to individuals of all ages having any disability, as well as to families, businesses, agencies, and municipalities. We are committed to the universal elimination of physical and attitudinal barriers, as well as assisting individuals with disabilities to successfully make the transition from system-dependency to independence. For over 20 years, Independent Living, Inc. has touched the lives of literally thousands of people. Having a uniquely recipient-based perspective and approach to addressing disability issues, we have consistently exemplified cost-effective ways of improving the quality of lives of persons with disabilities. Every year, our Center provides a diversity of important resources to residents of our community.
