“Hearing loss isn’t always about age.”

And yet, that’s still the first assumption that catches so many people off guard.

When people meet someone with hearing loss, the first reaction is sometimes often:
“Oh… it’s probably their age.”

But hearing loss doesn’t follow one timeline.

Some people are born deaf.
Some lose hearing as children.
Some as teenagers.
Some as young adults.
Some through illness, injury, noise exposure, or medical negligence.
Some long before grey hair ever appears.

And yet, many still find themselves correcting the same assumption:
“No, it’s not because I’m older.”

Hearing loss isn’t a character flaw.
It isn’t a sign of decline.
And it certainly isn’t always age-related.

When people reduce hearing loss to “getting older" or "the aging process,” they miss the real story.
The diversity.
The complexity.
The lived experience.

Understanding this changes how people respond.
It replaces assumptions with patience.
It replaces awkwardness with respect.
It makes spaces more inclusive.

Hearing loss has many stories.
Age is just one of them.
