I’m a couple of weeks late but WOW! I can’t believe it’s been 17 years since opening Sankofa Massage & Coaching (formally Sankofa Massage & Bodywork).

It’s been an incredible journey to see how my practice has evolved into what it is today.

I am so grateful for all of your support and commitment to yourselves to better your health in every aspect. Some of you have been with me since the very beginning and for some, not as long. No matter the length, I thank you for trusting and choosing me to be apart of that change.

Reflecting on 2021:
Before you begin making resolutions for the new year, I invite you to take some time to reflect on your accomplishments throughout 2021. They need not be big achievements. Small moments that made you proud are just as important as the big ones!

This week, I sat down and did some reflecting of the past year. Here are some questions that I asked myself and answered:

1. What was my biggest challenge in 2021 and how did I
overcome it?
2. How did I grow as a person over this past year?
3. What am I most proud of myself for in 2021? What was my
biggest accomplishment or milestone?

If you're open to sharing, I'd love to read your responses. Post below or message me your answers.

Celebrating 14 years in Business with a Brand Refresh

I know I’ve been absent over the past few months. I was in the mists of a brand refresh to reflect the Life and Trauma Coaching services that I offer.

September marked 14 years in business and a brand refresh was well overdue. This comes with an updated business name and a new website.

Sankofa Massage & Bodywork is now officially Sankofa Massage & Coaching

My inspiration for the website palette is the feedback from all of you. Throughout the years, many of you have commented on how you felt when you walked into the studio or how you felt after your sessions. So, I wanted my website to reflect that feeling…warm, non-judged, comfortable, safe and relaxed.

Take a peek around the new website and let me know what you think!

Happy International Women’s Day!

This photo was taken 2 years ago in Arizona. One day, I will tell the story behind this picture. For now, I will say that it was ME stepping into my POWER!

I don’t know who needs to hear this but you need to hear this.

Your decisions are yours to make. Stop allowing people to make your decision for you.

You and only get to choose how you feel, what you want to live your life, and what you believe! And you have the right to change your mind!

No one has the right to tell you how you should feel. And when they do, don’t believe them. Don’t believe them!

When you allow people to make decisions for you, you are literally handing over your power. You have just given them the keys to your house!

And you wonder why you feel so lost, you feel sad, and you no longer recognize yourself. Stop!

Stop saying yes when you really mean no.

Stop giving people permission to live your life for you.

And stop letting people dim your light.

You have the right to be visible, you have the right to be heard, you have the right to take up space! And You have the right to feel the way you feel!

So I’ll say this again.
You and only you get to choose how you feel, what you do with your life and what you believe. And you have the right to change your mind.

You and only you get to choose.

Every year on MLK Day, I sit to take a moment to reflect on his legacy, the fight and sacrifices that he, Coretta Scott King and others made because they had a dream. A dream of equality, unity, inclusivity and freedom for ALL.

In 2019, for the first time, I visited The King Center in Atlanta. It was such a moving and emotional experience for me. While sitting in the pews of Ebenezer Baptist Church with tears streaming down my cheeks, I thought,“Thank goodness we have come so far as a country and as a people”.

Today, I realize that it was just an illusion. Yes, we have made some progress but not enough. I know we will get there as change takes time.

So, I ask that you continue to do your part, educate yourself, speak up and advocate for others. Change can only happen if we work together.

“The time is always right to do what is right.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Patience•Resilience•Faith
Instead of making resolutions this year, try something new, like finding an intention word(s) for the year.
Some examples are Trust, Gratitude Self-Love, Heal, Joy, Rest etc

What are your words?

It's been a very busy summer. I was interviewed a few weeks back to talk about my experience as a Black business owner during the pandemic in Newburyport. You can read the interview below.

https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/for-black-business-owners-on-the-north-shore-perseverance-pays-off/2177745/

Tye Burrell was working as a registered nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 2000 when her life changed forever. As she was doing rounds that day, she saw a patient who she knew to be at risk of falling and hurting himself trying to get out of bed. Instinctively, Burrell ran to break...

We still do not have a reopening date set currently but hopefully Friday we will receive more information. As soon as I get the green light, I will let you know.

Until then keep smiling, protect your mind, continue speaking up against racism and police brutality. If you’re going to be out there protesting please wear a mask!

As a black business owner and a black woman, it has been an extremely difficult couple of weeks for me as it has been for most in the black community. Throughout my entire life, I have experienced racial discrimination and systematic inequalities.

The recent events that have transpired are not new to many of us in the black community. We have repeatedly witnessed and/or experienced the racial injustices, inhumane treatment and human rights violation of men, women and children simply because of the color of our skin.

Now, eyes are wide opened and conversations are being had around dismantling systemic and institutionalized racism. I hope that when the camera stops rolling and the excitement calms down, you continue with the same outrage to fight against racism and for human rights. I am filled with pride watching so many people, young and old with diverse backgrounds coming together, standing up and speaking up. A shift is happening and I am hopeful that there will be change in my lifetime.

Difficult conversations are hard. It’s better to ask the uncomfortable questions instead of remaining silent, as silence can be taken for complacency and staying silent only perpetuates the cycle. Even though it feels uncomfortable, it is so important to speak up. I feel that it’s the only way we can create a change.

All lives will only matter when Black Lives Matter too.
