Word on the street is, our USAToday article share was a big hit (insert cheer!). To keep our community extra motivated, we’re providing a few more suggestions - this time from Insider, which has compiled some helpful apps (think: meditation style). https://www.insider.com/mental-health-awareness-month

Be sure to let us know which you find most helpful/useful!

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Newburyport Pediatrics is taking a page out of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (“NAMI”) approach this year. We learned that NAMI has a Wall of Gratitude set up where participants write what they are grateful for on a post-it note and add it to the wall.

If you’re in the Newburyport Pediatrics office this month, please contribute and let us know what you’re grateful for! You can also post it below!

And, if you want to read more about the Wall of Gratitude - check it out here:

What are two things that come to mind when you think of May? For us, it's Justin Timberlake's meme and Mental Health Awareness month!

All kidding aside, we know this year’s is our most important one yet and despite over a year of isolation, Newburyport Pediatrics wants you and your kiddos to know you’re not alone. We’ll be sharing various ideas throughout the month to inspire self-care. For starters, take a look at this USA Today article which provides some helpful self-care tips (while their intended audience is likely adults, we know you can incorporate these into your children’s daily enrichment). And, as always, if you need anyone to talk to - Dr. Merkrebs and her staff are only a phone call (or visit) away: https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/health-wellness/2021/05/01/mental-health-awareness-month-treat-yourself-self-care/7409259002/

Fun fact: Air purifiers are eligible for reimbursement with Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Health Savings Accounts (HSA), and Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRA) with a letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). Unsure if you have any of those? Speak with your company’s HR/Benefits Department for more info.

EYE still want to know: How do you protect your eyes when screen-staring is part of our normal living? Proper lighting? Blue light blocker glasses? Keeping screens at least an arm’s length away? Taking breaks a la the The American Optometric Association (see image below)? Or, are you utterly unsure and need some guidance? Let us know below and feel free to reach out to our office for suggestions too.

The AOA recommends following the “20-20-20 rule”, which is taking 20-second breaks every 20-minutes to look at something 20-feet in the distance. This will help your eyes blink and in turn, relax.https://www.aoa.org/documents/infographics/SYVM2016Infographics.pdf

Time Magazine also shared a few tips and addressed the “What’s the Best Way to Stare at Screens All Day” question https://time.com/4789208/screens-computer-eye-strain/

EYE want to know: How do you protect your eyes from the harsh sun rays? The Mayo Clinic recommends you look for sunglasses that “block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Screen out 75% to 90% of visible light. Have lenses that are perfectly matched in color and free of distortions and imperfections.” For more info, click here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/expert-answers/uv-protection/faq-20058021

When it comes to sunglasses, UV protection matters. Here's why.
