🌟Employee Spotlight 🌟
on Iliana Granados
Learning Center

In just seven months as Employee Experience and Culture Coordinator at UNC Health Appalachian, Iliana Granados has seamlessly stepped into her busy role.

She leads the New Employee Success Transition program, staying in regular contact with new hires to support a smooth onboarding experience. Iliana also facilitates General New Hire Orientation, creates professional development opportunities for teams across UNCHA, and plans meaningful employee engagement events throughout the year.

“What I love most about my job is being part of a team that creates events and initiatives that show genuine appreciation for our everyday heroes. It’s incredibly meaningful to me that I get to ‘make someone’s day’ whether it’s through an appreciation event, a thoughtful phone call, a handwritten card, or a simple email. I also genuinely enjoy working with my co-workers. They’ve been an absolute joy and make coming to work even more rewarding,” she shares.

Married to her high school sweetheart, Iliana and her husband are proud parents of three children and remain deeply engaged with their church, Unified City Church, which is an important part of their lives. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family at church activities, sporting events, and outdoor adventures, as well as relaxing with a good book or indulging in a little retail therapy.

💙 September is Su***de Prevention Month—but awareness and support matter every single day.

Su***de is the second leading cause of death for ages 10–34 and the tenth leading cause of death overall in the U.S. It affects people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.

Just like mental health challenges, suicidal thoughts can touch anyone. By starting conversations, reducing stigma, and showing compassion, we can all play a part in prevention. 💙

If you or someone you know is in crisis or struggling with suicidal thoughts, support is available:
• In an emergency, please call 911 or come to the nearest emergency department
• Call, text, or chat with trained counselors at 988 (National Su***de & Crisis Lifeline).
• You can also walk in and self-present at Appalachian Regional Behavioral Health Hospital anytime.
The address is 432 Hospital Drive, Linville, NC, or call 828-737-7071

This month, we’re happy to recognize Rachel Weaver, one of our incredible volunteers who helps out in both the Gift Shop and Human Resources!

Rachel has a heart for people and a passion for serving the High Country. After earning her Bachelor’s in Psychology from App State, she chose to give back to the Boone community through volunteering. She was drawn to UNCHA because our mission to build a healthy, resilient, and connected community reflects her own values.

“I enjoy being able to assist the staff and patients at UNC Health Appalachian. There’s a nice community here, and we all help each other,” she said.

Outside of volunteering, Rachel stays busy working, hiking, spending time with loved ones, and collaborating with App State’s Collab Lab research team on projects focused on strengthening communities.

We’re so glad to have Rachel on our volunteer team at UNCHA! 💙

Thank you, RB for everything you do for our staff at Cannon Memorial Hospital!

This month, we’re happy to spotlight RB Danner, a dedicated volunteer in the cafeteria at Charles A. Cannon, Jr. Memorial Hospital. Along with assisting the nutrition staff in the kitchen, RB helps unload, organize, and store supplies during delivery days—a task he fondly refers to as “slinging groceries.”🍅🍏🍞

A Boone native, RB grew up learning the ropes of managing stock at his grandparents’ business, Watauga Motor Market. After a career as a General Contractor and Carpenter Supervisor at Western Carolina University, RB brings his proactive spirit to volunteering. He believes in tackling tasks head-on, saying, “If something needs to get done—do it then and there.” RB also emphasizes the power of kindness, reminding us that “a big smile and a kind word go a long way because you never know the load someone else is carrying.”

Thank you, RB, for your hard work, positivity, and the invaluable support you bring to our team at Cannon Memorial Hospital! 👏

Volunteers are an essential part of our team, supporting patients, visitors, and staff across many areas of our healthcare system. Interested in making a difference? Apply today to volunteer at UNC Health Appalachian! Click the link in the comments to get started.⬇

Thank you, Stephanie, for your dedication to our team and our community. ❤️

We will never forget what we experienced (and are still experiencing) as a result of Hurricane Helene. We also won’t forget the heroes from all walks of life who showed up and helped us all through the storm. One of these heroes who comes to mind for many of our UNC Health Appalachian team is Avery Healthcare Market President Stephanie Greer. She was there from the beginning, taking care of her team and her community.

Many were facing devastating losses – homes had washed away, vehicles were submerged, belongings and livelihoods were destroyed. Stephanie was right there alongside them, not just in her role as a leader, but as a friend. Stephanie, in her bright red scrubs, sat with her employees, consoled them, hugged them, cried with them, and grieved with them. Stephanie not only cared for her employees, but her entire community.

Read more about this hero in red scrubs through the link in the comments. ⬇

TODAY IS THE DAY TO START VOTING!!! Your vote in the Defender Service Award will help us help others! Linville-Central Rescue Squad is a national finalist in the Search, Rescue, and Emergency Support category of this prestigious award. The winner of this award will receive a Land Rover Defender rescue vehicle and a $25,000 donation to their organization. Linville-Central Rescue Squad plays a critical role in backcountry rescues in the southern Appalachians, including the Appalachian Trail, Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, Wilson’s Creek Wild and Scenic River, and the forest areas surrounding the Blue Ridge Parkway. The rugged terrain often makes it impossible for standard vehicles to respond, and this award would greatly enhance their ability to reach people in need quickly and safely and to rapidly deliver a higher level of care than possible with an ATV. Linville-Central is highly deserving of this vehicle to enhance their search and rescue operations in these challenging areas. Take a 1-Minute Action - Sign up now to receive a simple “Reminder to Vote” email or text during the public voting period Oct 2 - 17, 2024. Visit www.SupportLinvilleRescue.com
