What started as a routine appointment turned into a life-changing journey for Calvin, a longtime firefighter who was unexpectedly faced with a cancer diagnosis that didn’t add up. After a year of misdiagnosis and treatments that weren’t right for his condition, Calvin and his wife knew something wasn’t right. That search for answers led them to City of Hope—where everything changed.

Diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Calvin finally received the correct care plan and a team that truly listened. Under the care of Dr. Popplewell and the City of Hope team, he completed treatment and continues to be supported through ongoing monitoring at City of Hope Atlanta.

“They actually listened. They cared about me as a person, not just a diagnosis.”

Today, Calvin is using his voice to advocate for cancer awareness and early detection within the fire service and helping others take charge of their health and seek the care they deserve. For Calvin, hope isn’t just a word - it’s what changed everything.💙

Every day in our hospital, patients and families share stories that define what compassionate care truly looks like. This month, those stories came together to paint a powerful picture—of nurses who bring light into dark moments, advocate tirelessly for their patients, and offer steady encouragement through every step of the journey.

Kimberly’s presence has been described as a source of comfort when it’s needed most—someone who takes the time to sit, listen, and ensure her patients feel supported, no matter the hour. Heike’s dedication shows up in the way she navigates complex challenges behind the scenes, working relentlessly so her patients can continue their care without interruption. Tania is known for her steady, no-nonsense approach, paired with a level of compassion that makes patients feel cared for like family. And Jacqueline’s encouragement has helped patients find the strength to keep going, offering hope and reassurance during some of their toughest days.

At City of Hope Atlanta, these stories aren’t the exception—they are the standard. They reflect the heart of our mission and the extraordinary impact our nurses make every single day. 💛 Join us in celebrating Kimberly, Heike, Tania, and Jacqueline, and share your own story of a nurse who made a difference.

We’re proud to share a major milestone for City of Hope Atlanta — we have officially earned our second American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition!

This prestigious honor is the highest level of recognition for nursing excellence and interprofessional collaboration, held by fewer than 10% of hospitals nationwide. Earning it again is a powerful reflection of the dedication, expertise, and teamwork that define our organization.

But most importantly, this recognition reflects what it means for our patients. Magnet designation is linked to higher quality care, improved patient outcomes, enhanced safety, and a more personalized patient experience. It means our patients can feel confident they are receiving care from highly skilled, collaborative teams who are committed to continuous improvement, innovation, and compassion at every step of their journey.

A huge thank you to all of our incredible nurses and staff who made this possible. Your compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to our patients continue to elevate everything we do. This recognition belongs to each and every one of you.💙

April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month and it’s a powerful reminder that cancer can impact anyone, even young, healthy men who feel like they have their whole future ahead of them.💙

At just 24 years old, Matthew Tyler was building his career, spending time outdoors, and planning his future with the woman who would later become his wife when he received unexpected news: testicular cancer. What he thought would be a minor health concern quickly turned into surgery, chemotherapy, and one of the most challenging seasons of his life.

Through the compassionate care and support he received at City of Hope Atlanta, Matthew found strength during treatment and hope for the future. From a dedicated care team that treated him like family to a supportive environment that helped him and his loved ones navigate each step of the journey, Matthew never felt alone.

Nearly 10 years later, Matthew is cancer-free, married, and the proud father of a healthy six-year-old daughter, something he once feared might not be possible after treatment.

Today, he shares his story to encourage other men to take their health seriously. If something feels different, do not ignore it. Early detection can make all the difference.

This Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, we honor survivors like Matthew and encourage men everywhere to prioritize annual checkups, perform self-exams, and seek care when something does not feel right. Stories like Matthew’s remind us that awareness, early detection, and compassionate care can lead to second chances and brighter futures. 💙
