It works…until it doesn’t. Alcohol isn’t always about the social aspects. Sometimes it’s about shutting your mind off. For a lot of first responders, it becomes the fastest way to come down after living in a constant state of stress. The problem is, what starts as relief can turn into dependence.

Alcohol activates the same part of the brain as Benzos, barbiturates, and muscle relaxers. It’s a temporary numbing effect.

But within hours, the brain compensates by reducing activity and increasing a neurotransmitter that does the opposite.

The result: elevated anxiety, heightened stress response, and a nervous system that's harder to regulate by the next day. What felt like a release becomes a chemical debt.

For first responders already managing chronic stress, alcohol as a coping tool accelerates the problem it appears to solve.

Stress and burnout don’t always look the way you expect.

From mental fog and slowed decision-making to emotional detachment and physical fatigue—these signs matter. And recognizing them early can make all the difference.

Through our partnership with ICISF, we’re committed to helping responders and organizations identify the warning signs and take action.

Because taking care of those who serve isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Most first responders already operate on poor sleep. Add alcohol to that equation and you're not resting … you're numbing out.

REM sleep is when your brain processes stress, consolidates memory, and repairs itself. Cutting it short leaves you tired, less sharp, less regulated, and less equipped for what the job demands.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month. If alcohol has become part of your wind-down routine, it's worth understanding what it's actually doing to your recovery.

Your brain remembers more than you think. Addiction isn’t just physical. It’s tied to places, routines, and patterns your brain has learned over time. That’s why feeling “fine” in a new environment doesn’t always last when you go home. Real recovery means preparing for those moments… not avoiding them.

Detox is the foundation of recovery, but it’s not something you should go through alone.
With 24/7 care, medical oversight, and a supportive environment, it can be done safely, and with dignity.

This Alcohol Awareness Month, we want you to remember, trauma doesn’t just get better on its own. Shaking it loose takes consistent sleep, time, support, and healthy habits.

Alcohol has no place in that mix. Drinking makes the pain easier to handle, but it doesn't resolve the underlying experience. Studies show that alcohol actually reinforces traumatic memories over time, making PTSD symptoms harder to treat and harder to recover from.

First Responder Wellness has helped more than 2,000 public safety professionals through evidence-based Residential and Intensive Outpatient treatment.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month.

Alcohol shortens the time it takes to fall asleep but it disrupts the sleep cycles that actually restore you.

Within the first half of the night, alcohol suppresses REM sleep, the stage tied to emotional regulation and stress recovery.

By the second half, your body starts fighting to rebound: waking you up, raising your heart rate, and spiking cortisol.

For first responders already dealing with shift work and critical incident stress, alcohol doesn't close the gap. It widens it.

First Responder Wellness

Law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMT’s, dispatch, emergency room personnel, and other first responders put themselves on the front lines of responding to crises and emergencies every day. Dealing with stress and trauma is a part of the job. Unfortunately, repeated exposure to highly stressful and traumatic situations is known to impact mental health and wellbeing in a myriad of ways.

Due to the very nature of their job, first responders experience more acute stress and trauma than the general public. In response to the high intensity of their jobs, drugs and alcohol use can become a means of coping, leaving First Responders at risk for developing substance abuse disorders along with co-occurring mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and stress disorders.

Simple Recovery’s First Responders Treatment Program is dedicated to meeting the needs of America’s crucial First Responders. We recognize the sacrifices you make every day as a first responder and have developed our comprehensive treatment program to serve and heal you. Whether you’re struggling from alcohol dependence or drug dependence such as prescription painkillers after an injury on the job, the First Responder Treatment Program at Simple Recovery is here to help you overcome your dependency and get you back to optimal health and wellness.
