DISC Sports & Spine Center is California's premier provider of spine care, orthopedics, pain management and sports medicine. With a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery center in Newport Beach and full-service clinic in Marina del Rey, DISC has set a new standard for high-acuity, minimally invasive spine surgery and orthopedic sports medicine surgery in an outpatient setting, both safely and on a cost-effective basis. DISC, which accepts most major insurance plans, is a subsidiary of Trias Global and a Chicago Pacific Founders portfolio company. Dr. Robert S. Bray, Jr., founded DISC with the vision of delivering an unparalleled patient experience for those suffering from sports injuries, orthopedic issues, and spine disorders. Since its founding, DISC has developed a highly integrated approach that customizes care across disciplines while embracing minimally and non-invasive techniques. Our individually picked, highly specialized physicians apply both established and innovative solutions to diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate their patients in a one-stop, multi-disciplinary setting. With a wide range of specialists under one roof, the result is an unmatched continuity of care with more efficiency, less stress for the patient, and a zero MRSA infection rate.

Pain management requires more than symptom control. It requires understanding how pain affects movement, function, and overall quality of life.

Dr. Dickran Altounian, DO, MS, is a double board-certified specialist in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine at DISC. His background in neuroscience and global medicine, combined with advanced fellowship training in interventional pain at UCLA, informs a comprehensive approach to musculoskeletal and spine-related pain conditions.

Dr. Altounian integrates pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic, and interventional therapies - including image-guided injections, radiofrequency procedures, neuromodulation, and electrodiagnostic testing - within a structured, multidisciplinary model. His goal is not simply to reduce pain, but to restore function safely and sustainably, helping patients move forward with greater confidence and clarity.

There is a common perception that motion-preserving procedures are inherently superior. In reality, motion is only beneficial when it is structurally supported. If the spine demonstrates instability, slippage, or advanced facet arthritis, preserving motion may increase pain rather than resolve it.

Fusion remains the most reliable solution for certain conditions involving deformity or compromised structural support. By stabilizing the affected segment, fusion protects nerve structures and restores alignment in a controlled and durable way.

Treatment decisions at DISC are based on risk assessment and long-term protection. Preserving motion is considered when safe. Stabilizing the spine is chosen when necessary. Both approaches reflect careful clinical judgment.

Motion is not measured by a single moment after treatment. It is measured by what becomes possible again.

For many spine and joint patients, restoration begins gradually - standing without hesitation, walking farther without needing to sit, sleeping through the night without nerve pain, or returning to daily routines that once felt limited. These functional gains reflect meaningful structural improvement beneath the surface.

At DISC, motion restoration is not defined by eliminating every ache. It is defined by restoring alignment, stabilizing affected segments, relieving nerve compression, and protecting surrounding structures so movement can occur efficiently and safely over time.

Whether achieved through conservative care, motion-preserving procedures, or stabilization when necessary, the goal remains the same: durable function that supports long-term mobility.
Because restoring motion is not just about movement, it is about restoring capacity.

Cold plunges, saunas, and recovery gadgets are popular — but they cannot replace sleep.

In a recent Men’s Journal feature, Dr. William Workman discusses why sleep remains the most effective and evidence-supported recovery strategy available. During deep sleep, the body restores muscle tissue, regulates cortisol levels, replenishes glycogen stores, and supports neurologic recovery.
According to Dr. Workman, recovery tools may supplement performance, but they cannot compensate for poor sleep habits.

The article explores why consistent sleep patterns may have a greater impact on injury prevention and long-term performance than many high-cost recovery trends.

A partnership that puts patients first.

DISC Carlsbad and Tri-City Medical Center are collaborating to ensure that each patient is matched to the right environment for their procedure, from outpatient surgery to complex hospital care. The decision is driven by clinical judgment and patient safety, not by convenience or structure.

By aligning outpatient precision with hospital-level resources, this unified model prioritizes what matters most: recovery, function, and long-term health.

Care should adapt to the patient, not the other way around.

Safety at DISC begins with how our centers are built.

DISC facilities are designed with advanced air filtration systems, controlled environments, and standardized safety protocols that support consistency across every stage of care, not just during procedures. From pre-op to recovery, each space is engineered to reduce variability and support predictable, well-managed outcomes.

This level of environmental control isn’t about scale or volume. It’s about creating settings purpose-built for spine and orthopedic care, where safety, preparation, and patient confidence are built into the experience.

Hospitals are built to manage a wide range of urgent and complex needs at once. DISC is built for something different.

As an outpatient spine and orthopedic care network, DISC is designed around scheduled procedures, coordinated clinical teams, and clearly defined care pathways. Evaluations, imaging, treatment planning, surgery, and recovery are aligned within one integrated system—reducing handoffs, minimizing delays, and improving efficiency at every stage of care.

For patients, this means clearer communication, a more streamlined experience, and recovery timelines that often do not require a hospital stay, without compromising safety or expertise.

Purpose-built care creates the conditions for faster progress and more predictable outcomes.

A community-first partnership built around what’s best for the patient.

DISC Carlsbad and Tri-City Medical Center are aligning to deliver seamless spine and orthopedic care across North San Diego. This collaboration brings together outpatient excellence for routine cases and comprehensive hospital resources for advanced or higher-risk needs — all within one coordinated system.

The goal is simple: ensure every patient receives the appropriate level of care in the appropriate setting, without fragmentation or unnecessary transitions.

A unified approach to spine and joint care. Designed around safety. Grounded in outcomes. Built for our community.

Spine care is not defined by pain relief alone. Long-term outcomes depend on restoring alignment, stability, and function to support efficient movement without compensation. At DISC, treatment planning considers how spinal pathology affects posture, mobility, and overall biomechanics, with the goal of delivering durable results and sustained functional improvement—not just short-term symptom relief.

ACL injuries don’t all follow the same path—and treatment decisions depend on stability, activity demands, and long-term joint protection.

In our recent article, ACL Tear Treatment Options: When Do You Need Surgery?, DISC physicians explain how ACL injuries are evaluated and why some patients can recover with structured rehabilitation, while others benefit from surgical reconstruction. The article outlines how tear type, knee stability, and movement demands influence whether non-surgical care or surgery offers the safest, most effective outcome.

Understanding how the ACL functions - and what happens when it no longer stabilizes the knee - helps patients make informed decisions that protect cartilage, reduce future injury risk, and support confident movement over time.
