A 2025 AAD survey found that 20% of Gen Z still prioritize getting a tan over protecting their skin, and 25% say looking great now is worth looking worse later.
Many even believe it’s “better to be tan than to worry about skin cancer.”
But the data tells a different story.
Researchers found that indoor tanning increases the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by nearly 3x. Tanning bed users also showed DNA damage across almost the entire surface of the skin, including mutations that can lead to melanoma.

If you have a Gen Z child, niece, sibling, or someone you love who still tans indoors, gently encourage safer alternatives: spray tans, bronzing drops, SPF, and sun-smart habits.
There are so many ways to connect, bond, and feel good in your skin that don’t involve tanning beds.
