Hoag baby, Annie, and her family and friends celebrated her first birthday in the most meaningful way - by giving back to the place that supported her journey. Thanks to the incredible care of the Hoag NICU, Annie is now a happy, healthy one-year-old, and we couldn’t be more overjoyed.

In lieu of gifts, the family is honoring Annie’s journey by raising funds for the Hoag NICU to help provide much‑needed supplies for babies and families currently in care. Annie will even be delivering the donation in person and we can't wait to welcome her!

Find healing in creativity through the Artistic Healings program in partnership with Hoag.

Meeting every third Tuesday at 5 PM, this class offers Hoag cancer patients ages 18–50 a supportive space to explore feelings through a guided art experience.

Led by Gail Costello, a local artist, former art therapist, and generous Hoag donor, and supported by Hoag social services, this program helps make meaningful healing experiences possible for our community. We are deeply grateful for Gail’s commitment to enhancing the emotional well‑being of patients and for the positive impact she continues to make within the Hoag community.

See the transformation of the Surgical Pavilion at Hoag’s Sun Family Campus in Irvine, opening next month. What began as construction in progress is now nearing completion as the largest new structure on campus—a bold, 130,000‑square‑foot leap forward in surgical innovation.

Designed to elevate every aspect of care, the new pavilion expands our operating capacity with:

🔸8 state-of-the-art operating rooms, including hybrid and cardiovascular suites
🔸Advanced robotic-assisted surgery technology
🔸Real-time surgeon-pathologist integration, reducing processing time during procedures
🔸Intensive care unit with family room and balcony
🔸Dedicated lounge and courtyard space for staff

The new Surgical Pavilion blends cutting‑edge technology with calming, healing spaces to support comfort and better outcomes. Dedicated lounges and courtyard areas ensure our care teams also have space to unwind and recharge—because caring for caregivers matters, too.

We look forward to opening this transformative new space, intentionally designed to meet the needs of our community. Learn more at boldlyhoag.org

On World Health Day, we celebrate the physician scientists at Hoag whose research is helping shape the future of health care around the world. Thanks to philanthropic support, doctors like David Benjamin, MD, at the Hoag Family Cancer Institute can focus on research, whether drafting publications, developing clinical trials, and translating discoveries from lab to bedside.

In 2025, Dr. Benjamin’s research ranked in the top 5% nationally for cancer publications and top third for citations (Doximity). He and other Hoag physicians have presented at national and international conferences, extending Hoag’s impact far beyond our community and highlighting the real-world impact of physician-led innovation.

Your support has the potential to turn ideas into innovations that improve health locally and globally.

Meet Cindy Lightner — a Hoag grateful patient turning her healing journey into hope for others.

After courageously facing a brain tumor diagnosis, Cindy became the first patient in Hoag’s new Styled for Surgery program—offered through Oncology Support Services and designed to reimagine the patient experience with compassion, dignity and care.

Developed by Ezequiel Goldschmidt, MD, PhD (pictured with Cindy above), a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon who specializes in brain tumors at Hoag’s Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute and the Hoag Family Cancer Institute, Styled for Surgery is offered at no cost to patients, thanks to generous donor support.

“At Hoag, we understand that healing after brain surgery isn’t just physical; it’s emotional too,” said Dr. Goldschmidt. “By coordinating incision planning with a patient’s natural hairstyle, we can minimize visible impact, helping our patients heal with comfort, confidence and dignity.”

Now, Cindy is giving back in a big way. Over the next year, she’s rallying her community to help establish a $100,000 endowed fund that will sustain the Styled for Surgery program for generations to come. From engaging her network to hosting a pickleball tournament later this year, Cindy is determined to ensure every patient feels supported from day one.

Huge news! We’ve reached a major milestone in establishing Hoag’s first comprehensive organ transplant center, filling a vital gap in care for our 3.1 million neighbors. The center will kick off with our emerging liver and kidney transplant program.

The impact of philanthropy continues to empower Hoag to recruit and retain the nation's top physicians. This program is led by a powerhouse team:

Dr. Kenneth Chang: Visionary leader and Executive Medical Director of Hoag’s Digestive Health Institute and the James & Pamela Muzzy Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair in GI Cancer

Dr. Aaron Ahearn: Our newly recruited Surgical Director and nationally recognized transplant surgeon.

Dr. Tse-Ling Fong & Dr. Brian Lee: Our long-standing Co-Directors of the Hoag Liver Program, whose expertise forms the heart of this initiative.

By combining our deep clinical roots with world-class surgical expertise, we are ensuring life-saving care stays right here in Orange County.

Pending regulatory approval, we look forward to a projected launch as early as 2027. 🗓️
