Hair loss in women is far more complex than “stress” or “aging”—and understanding the science is often the first step toward relief.

Hair grows in cycles:
Anagen (growth) → Catagen (transition) → Telogen (rest/shedding).

At any given time, about 85–90% of your hair should be in the growth phase. When that balance is disrupted, shedding increases and regrowth slows.

So what disrupts it?

🧬 Hormones
Estrogen supports hair growth. When estrogen drops or fluctuates—postpartum, perimenopause, menopause, after stopping birth control—the growth phase shortens. Meanwhile, androgens (like DHT) can miniaturize hair follicles, especially in genetically sensitive women, leading to female pattern hair loss.

🧠 Stress & the nervous system
Physical or emotional stress increases cortisol, which can push large numbers of hairs into the telogen (shedding) phase all at once—a condition called telogen effluvium. The shedding often shows up 2–4 months after the trigger, which is why it can feel sudden and confusing.

🩸 Nutrient deficiencies
Iron deficiency (even without anemia), low ferritin, vitamin D deficiency, and inadequate protein intake can all impair follicle function. Hair is not essential for survival—so the body deprioritizes it when resources are low.

🧫 Inflammation & scalp health
Inflammation around the follicle—whether from autoimmune conditions, chronic scalp irritation, or underlying dermatologic issues—can disrupt growth signaling and weaken the follicle environment.

🧬 Genetics
Some women are genetically predisposed to follicular sensitivity to androgens. This doesn’t mean hair loss is inevitable—but it does mean early intervention matters.
