Want a faster recovery after liposuction?

Start walking.

It sounds simple but it’s one of the most important things you can do.

Walking improves circulation, helps move fluid through your lymphatic system, and reduces swelling.

It also increases blood flow to healing tissues, which helps your body recover faster.

I usually recommend starting the day after your procedure.

Keep it simple: short, easy walks at first then gradually increase over time.

You don’t need intense workouts right away.

Just walking can make a big difference in how quickly you heal and how smooth your results look.

A lot of people think liposuction is the “easy way out.”

In reality it often becomes the starting point.

Most of my patients aren’t lazy. They diet and they exercise, but there are certain areas that just don’t change.

When we remove that stubborn fat, something shifts. You start seeing your body differently.

Your clothes fit better. Your waist looks smaller. You feel more confident in the mirror.

And that confidence turns into momentum.

Patients tell me they start working out more, they become more mindful of what they eat and they want to protect the results they worked for.

Liposuction isn’t a weight loss procedure.

It’s a body sculpting procedure.

But for many people it becomes the motivation that helps them finally stay consistent.

If you have extra fat and loose skin on your arms, you’ve probably been told one thing:

You need an arm lift.
Which means cutting the skin and a long visible scar.

But a lot of patients don’t want that. They don’t want major surgery and they definitely don’t want a scar.
They just want improvement.

That’s where Ultrasculpt comes in.

I remove the excess fat with liposuction under local anesthesia which is minimally invasive.
Then I tighten the skin using Quantum RF.

This delivers controlled heat under the skin, and many times I can actually see the skin contract during the procedure, almost like shrink wrapping.

From there, your body continues to build collagen over the next 3–6 months, tightening the skin even more.

The result are slimmer arms, tighter skin and no long arm lift scar.

It’s not for everyone but for the right patient, it can be a powerful alternative.

If you’ve heard of awake liposuction, here’s the simple reason it works so well.

It all comes down to the numbing solution we use.

This solution has four key components:

First, saline: essentially sterile salt water.
This gently expands the fat cells, making the fat easier to remove and allowing for smoother, more controlled sculpting.

Second, lidocaine: the anesthetic.
This numbs the area from the inside so you stay comfortable throughout the procedure… without needing general anesthesia.

Third, epinephrine: this constricts small blood vessels.
That means less bleeding, less bruising, and a safer procedure overall.

And finally, bicarbonate: this reduces acidity, making the solution more comfortable and helping the anesthetic work more effectively.

When all of this is combined, it allows me to perform liposuction safely under local anesthesia with you awake and breathing on your own the entire time.

No general anesthesia.
Minimal downtime.
Walk out the same day.

Most patients are back to normal activities the next day and back in the gym within a week.

Fibrosis after liposuction: what it feels like and why it happens.

After lipo, it’s normal to feel areas that are firm, tight, or even a bit lumpy. That’s called fibrosis, and it’s part of your body’s natural healing response.

As fat is removed, your body forms scar tissue. That tissue can thicken as it heals, which is why it may feel harder in certain areas especially when you move or flex.

You’ll notice this most in the abdomen.

Why? Because your core is constantly in motion, and more movement can lead to more scar tissue forming during recovery.

The good news is it’s common and it’s treatable.

What helps:

• Early lymphatic massage to reduce fluid buildup.
• Wearing your compression garment consistently.
• Staying active with light daily walking.
• Proper hydration.
• Devices that help soften and remodel the tissue.

With the right care, fibrosis improves over time and early intervention can make a big difference in your final results.

One thing Dr. Cohen is truly honored by is the number of patients who travel from across the country to visit Orange County Lipocenters.

Many patients choose this approach because the procedure is designed to be safe, efficient, and minimally disruptive to their daily life.

Unlike traditional liposuction that often requires general anesthesia, Dr. Cohen performs the procedure using local anesthesia, allowing patients to remain awake and comfortable.

This approach often means minimal pain, minimal downtime, and results that can be seen quickly.

Our office is conveniently located in Orange County, Southern California, just minutes from John Wayne Airport, making travel simple for out-of-town patients.

Many patients are able to fly home the next day, and Dr. Cohen continues to monitor recovery through virtual follow-ups.

Patients also receive guidance on lymphatic massage providers near their home to help support proper healing after surgery.

The goal is to provide a modern body sculpting approach that delivers noticeable results without the long recovery typically associated with major surgery.

Here are a few reasons why liposuction under local anesthesia can be beneficial for many patients.

1. Less tissue trauma:
Using very small cannulas helps minimize trauma to surrounding tissue. This often means less swelling, less bruising, and less postoperative discomfort.

2. Pain is controlled during the procedure:
The treatment area is fully numbed, so patients typically feel pressure but not pain during the procedure. If needed, additional numbing medication can easily be administered.

3. Less pain medication afterward:
Many patients only require over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol or Motrin after the procedure. Avoiding narcotic pain medications can help reduce side effects like nausea or constipation.

4. Faster recovery:
Patients are able to get up and walk immediately after the procedure. Many are back to normal daily activities quickly, with some returning to the gym within about a week.

5. Avoiding general anesthesia:
Because the procedure is done under local anesthesia, patients avoid the breathing tube and other aspects associated with general anesthesia. For many healthy patients, this can provide an added layer of safety.

Local anesthesia isn’t the right choice for every patient, but for the right candidate, it can mean less discomfort, faster recovery, and a smoother overall experience.

Not everyone is a good candidate for liposuction and being honest about that is important.

Here are a few situations where liposuction may not be the right choice:

1. When the goal is weight loss. Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure. It is designed for body contouring and sculpting, not for dropping pounds on the scale.

2. Poor skin elasticity. If the skin cannot tighten and retract after fat removal, liposuction alone may not produce smooth results. In some cases, skin tightening treatments may help, while in others a different procedure may be recommended.

3. Uncontrolled medical conditions. Patients with conditions such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, or other significant health concerns may not be good candidates until those issues are properly managed.

4. Unrealistic expectations. Liposuction can create meaningful improvement, but it’s important to have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve.

Dr. Cohen always reviews these factors during consultation because the right patient gets the best results.

The goal is simple: provide honest guidance and help patients achieve results they will feel confident about.

“Am I too old for liposuction?”

The truth is that age alone is not the deciding factor. What matters most is your overall health.

Traditional liposuction is often performed under general anesthesia, which can carry higher risks, particularly as patients get older.

That’s why Dr. Cohen takes a different approach.

Our procedures are performed using local anesthesia, allowing patients to remain awake and comfortable while avoiding the risks associated with general anesthesia.

For many healthy patients, this approach can be much easier on the body.

In fact, Dr. Cohen has successfully treated many patients in their 60s and 70s who simply want improvement, not perfection.

They want their clothes to fit better.
They want to feel confident when they look in the mirror. They want to feel good in their own skin again.

If you’re healthy, age alone does not automatically disqualify you from body contouring.

Many people hear the term Mommy Makeover and immediately think of major surgery, long recovery times, and significant downtime.

At Orange County Lipocenters, we take a different approach.

Instead of large incisions, drains, and general anesthesia, Dr. Cohen performs liposuction under local anesthesia using very small cannulas.

Patients remain awake, comfortable, and the recovery is typically much easier.

The goal is to sculpt and refine your body while minimizing downtime.

After removing unwanted fat, Dr. Cohen also uses Quantum RF, an advanced skin tightening technology that delivers controlled radiofrequency energy beneath the skin.

This helps tighten the underlying support fibers while stimulating your body to produce new collagen over the next 4–6 months.

Patients often notice tightening immediately, with continued improvement as the skin gradually becomes firmer and smoother.

The result is a modern Mommy Makeover approach focused on body sculpting and skin tightening, designed to help you feel confident in your clothes, in the mirror, and in your everyday life.

The foods you eat can actually make a big difference in how quickly your body heals after lipo.

Start by focusing on protein-rich foods like chicken, turkey, eggs, and Greek yogurt. Protein helps repair tissue and supports faster healing after surgery.

Next, include anti-inflammatory foods such as berries, leafy greens, olive oil, and avocado. These foods help reduce inflammation and support your body during recovery.

It’s also helpful to eat potassium-rich foods like bananas, sweet potatoes, spinach, and kiwis. Potassium can help balance fluids in the body and reduce excess swelling.

And don’t forget hydration. Drinking plenty of water helps your body flush out fluids and recover more efficiently.

And avoid salty processed foods, sugary snacks, and alcohol, as they can increase swelling and slow down healing.

When you give your body the right nutrients after liposuction, you support smoother healing and better overall results.
