Stay Hydrated, and Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Summer is the time for hot temperatures and outdoor play. When added together, it could also mean dehydration and heat exhaustion or heat stroke. This is especially true for children because their bodies don’t cool down as fast as adults.
Make sure children always have a filled water bottle with them.
Allow your child to choose a fun water bottle and/or straw, and stick to water — not soda or juice.

The following amounts of water each day (depending on exact age, medical conditions, activity levels and the weather):

6 months and older: 0.5–1 cup a day
Toddlers: up to 4 cups a day
School-aged children: up to 8 cups a day
Teens: 8–12 cups a day
No matter if you are in the backyard, at the beach or taking a walk outside, you need water to avoid dehydration. When out in the heat, your body loses fluids and electrolytes through sweat, and if you lose too much fluid and salt, you can become dehydrated.”

If your asthma is worse, it could be because of the high pollen levels. If your asthma is allergic, your symptoms are most often triggered by inhaling allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, pollen or mold.

UV rays can cause a sunburn , but did you know it can also burn the clear, protective outer layer of the eye.
Avoid the risk by wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30 or higher and UV-blocking sunglasses and a hat—even on cloudy days. Use glasses labeled either "UV400" or "100% UV Protection."
If you're going to be around water, polarized lenses are especially good for blocking glare.
Watch out for poison ivy and oak and if you touch it, or it gets around your face and eyes, keep your hands away from your face and wash them immediately.

The rate of bacterial infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae among children has been increasing since last spring and remains high, especially among those ages 2-4 years.

M. pneumoniae is a common cause of mild respiratory illness but also can present as a less severe form of pneumonia known as “walking pneumonia.” Serious complications are uncommon but can include new or worsening asthma, severe pneumonia and encephalitis.

Bacteria are spread by inhaling respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Outbreaks occur mostly in crowded environments like schools, college residence halls and daycares. M. pneumoniae infections can occur at any age but most often occur among children ages 5-17 years and young adults.

Symptom onset typically is gradual and can include fever, cough and sore throat. Younger children also may have symptoms such as diarrhea, wheezing or vomiting. Contact our office for more information and personalized care for your child.

Asthma has multiple causes, and it is not uncommon for two or more different causes to be present in one child. Asthma is more than wheezing. Coughing, recurrent bronchitis and shortness of breath, especially when exercising, are also ways that asthma appears.
