Newport Orthopedic Institute has resumed non-essential orthopedic care since June 2020. As always, we will continue to provide expert ortho

pedic care while putting patient safety first. We understand that COVID-19 has caused some patients to delay their orthopedic care. We can safely see patients at our offices with these additional safety measures in place:

1) Staggered appointment times to ensure patients are able to maintain 6 feet social distancing.

2) Daily temperature reading of staff, physicians and patients as they enter our facilities.

3) Limiting contact and wait time with At-Home Appointment Check-in & Registration.

4) Requiring patients, staff and doctors to wear face coverings to help prevent the spread of the virus.

5) Patient Pre-Op COVID-19 Test: Patients scheduled for surgery will be required to complete a COVID-19 test 3 days prior to surgery followed by self-isolation / home quarantine until scheduled surgery date.

6) Telehealth Appointments offered by phone, tablet or computer to pre-existing patients.

7) Visitor Restrictions: All non-essential guests are asked not to accompany patients in order to limit the number of persons within an enclosed area. If a guest is an essential care-taker for the patient they must also meet CDC screening guidelines.

8) Online Pre-Op Classes: We are offering online pre-op classes through HOI to better prepare patients for a successful surgery & recovery.

9) Limiting personnel in the Operating Rooms.

Back-to-School Reminder: Protect Your Child’s Spine! It's time for another school year! It’s important to keep your child’s back health in mind. Here are a few tips to make sure their backpack is helping, not hurting: Size and Fit : The backpack should fit secure against your child's back. Make sure it’s not wider than their torso and doesn’t hang more than 4 inches below their waistline. Distribute the Weight: Your child should use both shoulder straps, padded straps are preferred. A backpack with a waist strap can also help balance the weight. Don't overpack: The backpack should weigh no more than 10-15% of your child’s body weight. Load the heaviest items closest to the back and lighter items toward the front. Lift Safely: Avoid swinging the backpack to get it on. Lift safely by bending at the knees. Warning Signs: If your child is complaining of back pain, slouching, or showing red marks from straps, it’s time to re-evaluate the backpack situation. A few small adjustments can go a long way in preventing future issues. In this video we show you how to fit a shoulder abduction sling! After surgery, patients wake up with this sling already on. Typically, they are educated on how to fit their sling but coming out from anesthesia will make them forget. We thought it would be helpful to re-educate patients on how to fit this sling to reduce their frustrations!
