☀️📚We are thrilled to announce an addition to our Summer Enrichment offerings - Cursive Camp 2026!📚☀️

💜 An inclusive space where all students - including those with dyslexia - can find their flow. We use cursive’s unique, connected strokes to end letter reversals and sharpen memory, focus, and hand-eye coordination. This sensory-rich program is designed to boost brain power and confidence, making it the ultimate summer "brain-drain" prevention!

• Group size - Small group session (4-6 students)
• Ages: Beginner Level/Grades 2-3 •Advanced Level/Grades 4-6
• Session 1 - June 16th - July 16th, 2026 (two days per week)
• Session 2 - July 21st - August 20th, 2026 (two days per week)
• 60 minutes per day
• Cost - $325.00 per session

Please give a warm welcome to Ms. Anna Harris who is joining our advocacy team here at HRDC!

Anna brings a diverse background in special education, school leadership, and compliance, with experience supporting students, families, and school teams in a variety of roles within public education. She began her career as a special education teacher, where she built a strong foundation in individualized instruction, IEP development, and collaborative problem-solving to support student growth and achievement.

Over the course of her career, Anna has served in both instructional and leadership roles, including as a school administrator and district-level compliance coordinator. In these positions, she worked closely with families, educators, and multidisciplinary teams to support students in accessing appropriate services aligned with federal and state special education laws. Her experience helps families better understand the special education process and feel more confident navigating conversations with school teams.

Anna is passionate about helping families feel informed and supported as they navigate their child’s education. She values equity and access and believes in a collaborative approach that brings families and schools together to support student success.

Please give a warm welcome to our newest specialist, Ms. Alison Jansen!

With over 30 years of experience in elementary education, Alison is dedicated to fostering confident, capable readers and lifelong learners. She began her career with Hampton City Schools, where she spent nearly two decades teaching and mentoring both students and fellow educators. For the past decade, she has served as a Reading Specialist with Newport News Public Schools, providing data-driven instruction and targeted literacy support for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. She brings a wealth of expertise to her work with students and educators alike.
Alison is a highly accomplished educator with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Elementary Education from Old Dominion University, and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Endorsement from the University of Virginia. She is a National Board-Certified Teacher with specialized training in the Orton-Gillingham approach, LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling), and UFLI. Alison excels in structured literacy methods, tailoring instruction to meet the diverse needs of every learner. Through her work, Alison remains committed to making reading instruction engaging, purposeful, and rewarding, while equipping each student with the skills and confidence needed for academic success.
Outside the classroom, Alison enjoys spending quality time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loves staying active with water Zumba, relaxing at the pool and beach, and playing with her goldendoodle, Sandy. In her free time, she enjoys writing short stories, bringing creativity and storytelling into her life beyond the classroom.
