Everyone always points out how black & brown women are more likely to die from pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum related complications. But did you know that most of them were preventable? Racism, bias and chronic stress often play a part. The bottom line is providers need to see ALL women as equal and treat them as priority. Too often that doesn’t happen and a baby is born but a mother is lost and it shouldn’t be this way!

Thanks to all of the black and brown doulas who continuously show up in spaces where families need us the most.

Whether it be attending births, during pregnancy, bereavement, postpartum or through education, you showing up matters and is so important to bettering outcomes for black maternal health.

Remember to reset, recharge and rest because this work isn’t always easy, so take care of yourself too in all aspects. Tag a black doula! 🫶🏾

I was delighted to attend again the annual Black Maternal Health Conference on the campus of in ! I love being surrounded by so many people in this community of doulas, midwives, birth workers, nurses, doctors & others who really care about bettering our outcomes for our mamas. I was so touched to have heard in person the story of how came to be. Shoutout to my girl owner of for being a speaker!! There are so many different roads and experiences that pregnancy, labor and postpartum lead us. It’s important that we highlight everything so that no one feels like their story doesn’t matter.

They cut through layers… not just skin.
So if you’re healing from a C-section, this is your reminder:
slow down, rest, and give your body the grace it deserves. 🤎
That incision may be small on the outside, but your body has done something BIG.

Look this post isn’t for you elective c-section moms or the ones who are going to race to comment “well my c-section went fine and I had no problems.” Good for you!

This is for the mama who went in with a birth plan in mind that didn’t include surgery.

This is for the mama who went in wholeheartedly believing in her body and determined to deliver vaginally and not having time to process in that emergent second that her plan that she had for her birth experience, would go the complete opposite of what she envisioned.

Let’s be real, planning for something and then getting the complete opposite can be traumatic for anyone no matter what it is, but especially in a situation like this.

Don’t get me wrong, that mama was grateful for having another option to safely deliver her baby BUT that doesn’t mean that she can’t mourn what she wanted, planned for and thought her birth would look like.

Don’t dismiss her feelings. Whatever she is feeling is valid.
