Understanding the risk factors for oral cancer can help you take control of your health.

To***co use and alcohol consumption are major contributors, as is prolonged sun exposure to the lips. Other factors, like HPV infection, a family history of oral cancer, and age over 40, can also increase your risk. Regular check-ups and early detection are crucial for effective treatment and better outcomes.

Be proactive. Stay informed, get screened, and help protect yourself and your loved ones by recognizing the risk factors and early signs of oral cancer.

A simple self-exam can help you catch oral cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

How to do it:

1️⃣ Inspect lips, tongue, cheeks, and roof/floor of your mouth for any unusual patches, sores, or lumps
2️⃣ Gently feel your mouth and jaw for lumps or thickened areas
3️⃣ Check your tongue thoroughly – top, sides, and underneath
4️⃣ Feel along your neck and jawline for swelling
5️⃣ Do this once a month as part of your oral health routine

If you notice any patches, sores, or lumps that last more than 2 weeks, don’t wait—contact us for a professional screening.

Oral cancer screenings are quick, painless, and an important part of maintaining your oral health.

During a screening, an oral surgeon or dentist will visually examine the mouth and throat, feel the jaw and neck, and may recommend further testing if needed. Most screenings take just 10 minutes and can help catch potential concerns early.

Knowing the signs and staying on top of regular exams can make a big difference for your health and peace of mind.

Every adult should receive a visual oral cancer exam as part of routine dental care, typically performed during regular dental visits. Adding a quick self-check at home can also help you spot any unusual changes early.

You may benefit from annual screenings if you have any of the following risk factors:

• To***co use or va**ng
• Frequent alcohol consumption
• History of HPV
• Family history of oral cancer
• Age 40+

Here’s something many people don’t realize: nearly 25% of oral cancer cases occur in individuals with no known risk factors, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. That means regular screenings are important for everyone.

Early detection makes a meaningful difference. When oral cancer is identified early, treatment is often less complex and outcomes are significantly improved.

If you notice any changes in your mouth that last longer than two weeks, don’t wait to schedule an evaluation.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month—a timely reminder of how important early detection can be in protecting your overall health.

Oral cancer can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, and throat, and early symptoms are often easy to overlook. Persistent sores, lumps, red or white patches, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained pain in the mouth or neck should never be ignored.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are specially trained to evaluate abnormalities of the mouth, head, and neck, and can perform advanced diagnostic procedures when something doesn’t look or feel right.

If you notice any symptoms that last longer than two weeks, it’s important to seek a professional evaluation. Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes.

This month, we’re proud to support Oral Cancer Awareness Month by encouraging education, awareness, and proactive care. If something feels off, trust your instincts and get it checked.

Q: How do dental implants work?

A: Dental implants replace both the root and crown of a tooth to restore function and confidence. The process includes:

1. Placing a titanium implant into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root
2. Attaching an abutment, which connects the implant to the crown
3. Securing a custom dental crown to complete the restoration

The result? A natural-looking, fully functional smile you can rely on.
