Join us this Friday, August 8th from 10 am - 12 pm for guest speaker Emma Jane Powell presenting a lecture on Arpilleras. Interested in social justice quilting? Arpilleras were a form of craft art resistance born during the Chilean dictatorship of the 1970-90s. Learn how women communicated what was happening with the outside world with these appliqué textiles resembling quilts. We will explore various arpilleras from that time period and what they reflect. We will also look at arpilleras today and how this craft art is being recognized. Learn a little about history, politics, and art of South America during this very captivating lecture.

We will be having a national speaker at both of our day and night meetings in September. Carla Klop, from La Belle, Florida will be joining us in person!

For almost 30 years Carla made all her quilts by hand – and only discovered the rotary cutter in 2005! Recognizing how much faster making quilts would become, her ideas just went wild. There wasn’t enough time to complete all these quilts without finding ways to go faster. So this resulted in Shortcut Sheets – an accident discovered by breaking the rules. In this hour long presentation, Carla shares the path it took to go from Quilter to Designer. She has many quilts to show, all created over the
past few years. All 8 methods have been published in a binder format along with
practice patterns for each technique, quilt patterns, tips and worksheets.

Afterwards, she will be teaching a workshop on Saturday, September 13th from 9 am to 3 pm. Students can learn any of the 8 Shortcut Sheet methods in a one day class! The 8 methods are photographed below!

Cost of the class is $40/person, kit fee is $25 and includes fabric - pattern to make 28x28 centerpiece. Supplies needed for this class are 24" quilting ruler, 4 1/2" square up ruler and basic sewing and cutting supplies.

Sign up at the meetings this month or contact Calie. Sign-ups close on August 12th!

On the final day of the retreat we played the random objects game. A ceramic hand, an antique nail puller, a needle shuttle c**k, a soft foam punching fist, a plate tray stand, a sweater snag puller, a Bernina seam guide, a shark sewing machine patch, a weaving loom stretcher, and even a toilet bowl brush was brought in! The ultimate winner was Debbie F. with her branding irons! Congratulations Debbie!

This year, at the retreat, we played Bobbin Chicken, but with a twist! The Chicken Trophy could be taken from the winner! We had 5 ladies who won Bobbin Chicken and a few of those ladies kept winning and "stealing" it from the previous winner. The ultimate winner was the person holding the Chicken Trophy at 6pm on Sunday, at that winner was Sharon R. Congratulations Sharon and great job being a good sport everyone! This was a lot of fun!

The 2025 PPQG Retreat was held over the weekend and what a fabulous time we all had! We had an amazing view of the James River from the James River Country Club and a lot of new memories and friendships were made! Remember, what happens at the retreat stays at the retreat, so if you want to know what happens there join us at next years retreat!
