Feel the joy! Applications are now open for two earn-as-you-learn apprenticeship sessions. We are offering a daytime session September 8-October 16 based at our education center in Newport News and an evening session that begins August 25 in partnership with Virginia Peninsula Community College. (VPCC coursework will take place on their Williamsburg campus.)

Our program graduates Care Assistants to Nurse Aides and covers the cost of the state certification exam to be a CNA. Each session includes classroom work, clinical skills labs and on-the-floor experience at our nursing and rehabilitation centers.

Our apprentices build bonds and skills, and the joy on graduation day is always palpable. Apply today at vahs.com/apprenticeship

The Deloreans returned to the stage at the Port Warwick Summer Concert Series for the first time in several years, and you all turned out! The crowd's energy fed off the band's (primarily) '80s covers and it was good to see so many in the community enjoying the event and beautiful weather, including our residents at The Arbors Independent Living. Team members from VHS Hospice and VHS Home Health Care were on hand to share information about our services and share free bottles of water.

We're proud to sponsor the series, which runs 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays through August 27 at Styron Square. We look forward to seeing you through the rest of the season! Please stop by our table to say hello.

Ringleader Princess Henderson, our Director of Education, and members of our corporate clinical and education team are taking a skills fair on the road for “The Greatest Care on Earth” Traveling Circus. It started Tuesday at Coliseum Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for CNAs and will travel to all of our nursing and rehabilitation centers before it launches for nurses Aug. 5. It’s designed to keep our team members engaged with the refresher materials, including games and prizes.

Each station featured a game, like a pool full of rubber ducks for a charting challenge where CNAs had to choose whether or not to report a hypothetical situation. Other stations including skills refreshers on transfers and mobility, pressure areas, fall prevention, dementia, communication and customer service.

Our team is committed to offering education and training opportunities from onboarding to throughout a team member’s career journey with us. Want to join a team that values your career development? Visit vahs.com/careers to learn more about our job opportunities and apply.

We celebrated our Team Member of the Quarter and service anniversaries for the second quarter on the corporate Port Warwick campus today.

Congratulations to Team Members of the Quarter, SNF Clinic System Administrator Katelin Groce, and Process Improvement Manager Cerissa Atkins! Katelin and Cerissa (not pictured) organized the rollout of education and training for team members when the software changed this spring. They made the experience easy and engaging for team members.

We also recognized several team members' service anniversaries, including those marking one year with VHS. Thank you all for supporting individuals to live their best life!

Congratulations to Valentina Zakieva! She passed the NCLEX last week after completing the RN program at Eastern Virginia Career College in Fredericksburg.

She transitions from CNA/RMA to RN at York Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Valentina joined Virginia Health Services in 2021 in the dietary department at York. She then enrolled in the CNA apprenticeship program and received a National Apprentice Award in 2023 and added Registered Medication Aide to her title.

Originally from Kazakhstan, she said it wasn’t until she and her husband moved to the U.S. that she considered a career in healthcare.

“I had a lot of thoughts about what to do in the U.S. I don’t remember the doctors (from when I gave birth), but remember the nurses. That inspired me to get into healthcare,” she says.

She lives near York and walked in to apply.

In her path from dietary to nursing, she was encouraged to complete the RMA program, found help via WorkWell to set up childcare, received a national award and go to New Orleans to accept it, and now is a RN.

Valentina had to juggle working, going to school in Fredericksburg and picking up occasional shifts in that area, and the needs of her family, which includes two young sons. She says she had a lot of help from her mother.

“It’s difficult,” she says of nursing school. “You need accommodate everything and realize your strengths, (determine) if you can handle it. Nursing school is very hard. If you have family support and you can do it, why not?”

She has a team of support along the way, including York DON Desi Plunkett, Director of Education Princess Henderson and Process Improvement Manager Cerissa Atkins.

“I like to grow with VHS, it’s like a family here,” Valentina says. “I don’t regret asking for a job here. I have been here for four years. I realize what I want to do next is be a nurse practitioner, and I will try to work in that direction.”
