Colore**al cancer often develops without symptoms in its early stages, which is why screening is so important.
In this video, Dr. Jamila Wynter , Gastroenterologist with Riverside, explains what to watch for, why family history matters, and when to start screening.
For most adults, screening begins at age 45, earlier if you have certain risk factors. A colonoscopy can both detect cancer early and prevent it by removing precancerous polyps.
If you’re 45 or older and haven’t scheduled your screening, now is the time to talk with your provider.

Our Internal Medicine residents are demonstrating Hands-Only CPR to the beat because chest compressions are all about rhythm (100-120 beats per minute).
As we close out Heart Month, remember that CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival as most cardiac arrests happen outside the hospital.
In an emergency, remember to call 911 first. Then start Hands-Only CPR by pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of one of these songs.

An earache… that turned out to be a heart attack? 🫀
That was the reality for Brian Carroll, Chief of the Isle of Wight Rescue Squad, who experienced unusual symptoms before his cardiac event. His story is an important reminder that heart attack warning signs aren’t always classic chest pain and quick medical attention can make all the difference. ⚠️
Brian and Dr. Willliam Harris, Cardiologist with Riverside Cardiology Specialists, shared insight with WAVY TV 10 about why recognizing symptoms early and seeking care immediately can help reduce heart damage and save lives. 💚
Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital (RSMH) AND Riverside Walter Reed Hospital - Middle Peninsula (RWRH) have both been named to the 2026 Chartis Top 100 Rural Hospitals list.
Even more incredible? They are the ONLY two hospitals in Virginia to make the list this year.
This national recognition reflects the heart, skill, and commitment of our providers, nurses, clinicians, and support teams who show up every day to care for our communities with excellence and compassion.
🏆 RSMH earns this honor for the 6th time
🏆 RWRH earns this recognition for the first time
Please join us in congratulating these outstanding teams on a truly remarkable achievement!

Today, we were honored to sponsor the ❤️American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Luncheon ❤️
For more than a decade, Riverside Health has partnered with the AHA in support of women’s heart health. The luncheon brought together community leaders, advocates, and survivors to raise awareness, inspire action, and advance lifesaving research. Our leadership and team members were proud to stand alongside so many dedicated partners in service to our community.
As a proud local sponsor of the campaign, we also hosted our “Letters to New Moms” activation, where guests wrote heartfelt notes that will be paired with Infant CPR kits and blood pressure cuffs for pregnant and postpartum women.
We’re grateful for this longstanding partnership and our shared mission of building healthier futures for women across our region. ❤️

As we move deeper into the winter sports season, injury patterns continue to shift indoors.
Basketball, wrestling, and indoor track bring an increase in ankle sprains, knee ligament injuries, shoulder instability, and overuse conditions.
Stephanie Giammittorio is a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician specializing in sports and musculoskeletal injury care, sports concussions, sideline coverage, and ultrasound-guided injections for joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles.
Working alongside our Sports Physical Therapy team, she helps athletes recover from common winter injuries such as ankle sprains, knee ligament tears, shoulder instability, and overuse conditions while supporting a safe and confident return to play.
Early evaluation and coordinated care can prevent minor injuries from becoming season-ending setbacks.

Recent reporting highlighted that re**al cancer was an underlying cause in the death of actress Catherine O’Hara.
In this video, Tyler Goon, Nurse Practitioner with Riverside Gastroenterology Specialists, discusses symptoms to look for and when to get checked. Early colore**al cancer may not cause symptoms, which is why paying attention to changes in your body and staying on time with screening is so important.
If you’re 45 or older, talk with your provider about screening options, including colonoscopy, which can help detect and prevent colore**al cancer.
