ASHA is actively reviewing the latest executive order “Improving Education Outcomes by Empowering Parents, States, and Communities” that directs the closure of the U.S. Department of Education and is analyzing the impact on school-based members and the students and families you serve.
ASHA strongly supports an independent, cabinet-level U.S. Department of Education. We oppose this executive order and the other actions occurring to cut the department’s staff, cancel grants and contracts, and other changes that may hurt student achievement and access to the essential services ASHA’s school-based members provide.
Only Congress has the legal authority to formally abolish the department as a cabinet-level agency. The executive order apparently recognizes this, while directing the Secretary of Education to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the department” to the maximum extent permitted by law.
We are dedicated to protecting our professions and the people you serve, and we will continue to fight efforts to eliminate the department and other efforts to reduce its role. Help elevate our message by urging your members of Congress to protect the U.S. Department of Education and its critical role ensuring access to services and supports necessary for student achievement and success: https://at.asha.org/zR.
Check our executive order page (https://at.asha.org/zS) for future updates. We will also share updates in the ASHA Advocate (https://at.asha.org/zT) and ASHA Now.
