Ever wonder why people reach for chicken soup when they get a cold? Turns out there’s some science behind that. Real chicken soup is made from a base of broth, specifically bone broth which is responsible for it’s healing properties.

Bone broth contains amino acids and minerals those easy-to-absorb nutrients help fight off inflammation in the body.

By fighting off inflammation in the upper respiratory tract, bone broth can help us recover when we’re sick. Researchers believe the amino acids in broths and stocks—like arginine, cysteine, and glutamine—help reduce inflammation and boost our immunity. In foods and our bodies, amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. And, proteins play a crucial role in many bodily functions for maintaining our health.

But, when we’re sick or stressed, our bodies don’t produce those non-essential amino acids as well. And that’s when we need those amino acids the most, to help us heal! But, chicken soup—and especially bone broths—can help compensate for the lack. So, the amino acids and anti-inflammatory bone broth benefits make it a powerful immune-system booster. This may help to shorten and prevent colds and some illnesses!

The key is a long simmering bone broth. For an easy recipe go to:

3rd on our list of immune boosters is infrared sauna sessions.

Several studies have shown the LEDs found in infrared saunas stimulate white blood cell production and collagen growth by increasing energy at a cellular level.

Infrared light therapy also stimulates the circulatory system, causing the heart to beat more vigorously and blood vessels to dialate, this helps cleanse the circulatory system and better oxygenate the body’s cells. Better blood circulation means more toxins flow from the cellular level to the skin’s surface to improve cell health and strengthen the immune system.

Raising core body temperature is also key. Although infrared sauna’s heat you up differently than a fever, the increased body temperature provides the same benefits, including white blood cell and T-Cell production to ward off viruses. One study found that subjects who regularly used saunas had significantly fewer episodes of common colds than those who did not.

It is recommended to fully experience the immune-strengthening benefits of a sauna, it’s best to use at least twice a week throughout the year.

Looking for an Infrared Sauna to use locally? Call our office and we can get you scheduled for a session in ours!

Next up on our list of easy ways to support your immune system is Vitamin D.

You may have heard of this vitamin referred to as the sunshine ☀️ vitamin. For those of us living in a Northern area Vitamin D becomes incredibly important during those long, dark winter days to beat the blues. Did you know it plays a big role in immune health as well?

Vitamin D helps boost the immune system by stimulating naturally occurring anti-microbial peptides that protect the body by destroying invading microbes. These anti-microbial peptides live in immune cells throughout the body where they are able to directly fight off viruses and bacteria that cause common infections and sickness. These immune cells are also found specifically throughout the upper and lower respiratory tract, where they are able to fight respiratory infections and colds and flus. In order to be effective, these immune cells need sufficient Vitamin D.
Your doctor may recommend testing your Vitamin D levels and supplementing where needed. You can also make sure you are eating a variety of foods naturally rich in Vitamin D. Some examples are:

•Fatty fish like tuna, salmon or mackerel
•Some fortified dairy products such as milk and butter
•Cheese
•Egg Yolks
•Mushrooms
•Beef Liver

6 Easy Ways to Support Your Immune System

Now more than ever maintaining a balanced immune system is vital. Over the next few days we are going to discuss our top 6 ways to staying healthy and supporting our immune systems.

First up is Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for a healthy immune system response.

Vitamin C, scientifically known as ascorbic acid has been shown to support the immune system in many different ways.
•Vitamin C stimulates the production and function of white blood cells to fight off illness causing bacteria and viruses.
•Vitamin C assists the body in producing important antibodies, which are proteins that bind to invading microbes to neutralize them.
•Vitamin C has powerful antioxidant properties that help fight off free radicals and protect our white blood cells as they fight off invaders.
• In addition to the benefits for our white blood cells Vitamin C also has roles in other areas of the body. It helps to stimulate collagen production which assists our skin and mucous membranes in being our first line of defense against bacteria and viruses by promoting proper wound healing.
• Our adrenal glands use a significant amount of Vitamin C to respond to stress. Without a proper stress response our immune system is likely to be weakened.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient, meaning our body cannot produce it on it’s own, we must get our supply from the food we eat. Eating a varied diet rich in plant foods will ensure we are getting the Vitamin C we need.

In addition to oranges some of our favorite Vitamin C rich foods are: Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Red peppers, Tomatoes, Kiwi, Strawberries, Papaya, and Cauliflower.
