A Note from Jessica:

The more I do this, the more I realize- so many of us are trying to change the hardware without addressing the software. Me included! We want to look good, feel good, do good and we keep hitting a wall. It’s often our nervous system and subconscious messaging. As I was praying through this today- it hit me: We are updating our hardware but not our software and what does that always cause→ malfunction.

We must update and address both concurrently. And today I’m tapping into my internal messaging- and it’s telling me- you’re not safe, love is conditional, and you must perform. I see that little girl inside me and what she needs to hear is- you are safe, you are known, you are loved. You are a child of God and there is nothing you need to prove to anyone today.

This is a (free AI version) picture of adult me taking the time to care for my young self. Not ignoring, punishing, or lecturing her- just caring for her and speaking truth into some flawed internal messaging. If you are feeling tension and seem to keep hitting walls- I invite you to pray through what internal messaging may be directing you. As you all know- I love hormones- but truly hormones are just responses to the life that we are living- and hormone imbalances often reflect deeper internal imbalances.

I am only seeing patients a few days in January to work on the business side of things- specifically with organization, focus, and efficiency. The clinic will still be open. We are currently closed to new patients- but we are keeping a waiting list and seeking wisdom for how the Lord wants to guide and direct our services in 2026. Please join me in prayer for the future of the clinic. Above all, we strive to be a place where people can experience true care and restoration.

I wish you all a blessed Christmas season! With love, Jessica

A Note from Jessica:

Chronic illness is hard in many ways. You are fighting unseen battles every moment of the day that few realize and understand. I just want to share a small part of my story so that you know that I see and care for you and much more importantly, He does.

For 20 years I suffered from chronic fatigue and depression. In many ways, it ruled my life- it affected the people that I loved the most, my abilities as a wife and mother, my jobs, my friendships, and many of the “little” things that I now can take for granted, such as getting up in the morning and having the desire to live.

I went to many health professionals and tried a lot of treatments. I tried to make sense of what the Lord wanted for me and why He allows the struggle- which is easier to see once out of it but very difficult in the midst of the overwhelming challenges.

I never stopped pursuing healing and restoration, but every year I became a bit more resigned that this may be my burden to bear.

Then, about 10 years ago, I discovered functional medicine. I started making nutrition and lifestyle changes and over time, realized that I could have energy. I stopped living every day in a fog. I didn’t wake up counting down the time until I could take a nap.

I will tell you that this was incredible and I am so thankful for the people that helped me in this journey. However, my full healing didn’t come from functional medicine. I was still carrying around the heavy chains of depression and my life was ruled by a lot of fear. I was scared of rejection and abandonment, scared to succeed and scared to fail, scared of relationships and yet longing for connection.

Without the burden of chronic fatigue, I had the ability to pursue healing. There are many amazing God honoring ministries that supported me. Then, in 2017, I was at a retreat and surrounded by ladies praying for me. I had struggled with deep depression for 20 years. And in a moment, the Lord spoke to me and he said “I will restore to you the years the locusts have stolen”. And I renounced the oppression and fear that ruled much of my life. Then I stood up and I instantly felt lighter; the Lord spoke to my heart that the chains had fallen off.

That was 8 years ago, and it took me awhile to learn how to walk in this level of freedom- it was so foreign to me to not be carrying around my chains. It took courage to walk in newness of life. I know I made some mistakes but I have learned, through receiving from the heart of Jesus, to have grace on myself- because healing is not a perfect, linear journey. It’s messy, and so am I, and so are you, and that’s okay.

And that is why we have this clinic. Because when the Lord heals and restores, when he sets our feet upon a rock, He more fully invites us to partner with Him in the work He is doing in the world. And it is so hard, but so good, and I can’t imagine doing anything else. And this is why this work will always come from a tender place of care in my heart for all of you. And why this clinic has to be about so much more than just functional medicine.

Our prayer is that Abundant Care and Wellness is ultimately a place where you can experience the love and freedom the Father has for you- because this is the only place true and full healing and abundance is found. At the end of the day, we will make mistakes, have bad days, and our delivery of care will have flaws. But the prayer and hope of my heart is that we, in spite of our weakness, can provide a place and service that is a conduit and support for you to experience the freedom and healing that is only found in and through Jesus.

Serving you brings me so much joy and fulfillment and I am deeply grateful for each and every one of you.

Revolutionizing Breast Cancer Screening: Thermography

Did you know that breast thermography can detect early signs of cancer by measuring subtle temperature changes in breast tissue—without radiation or compression?

Unlike mammography, which has limitations with dense breast tissue and involves discomfort and radiation exposure, thermography is:
- Non-invasive
- Painless
- Radiation-free
- Effective for all ages, including women with implants or fibrocystic breasts

Recent advancements show over 90% sensitivity in detecting malignancy. See comprehensive research review posted below for more information.

As cancer cells grow, they increase blood flow and heat—thermography picks this up before a lump forms, making it a powerful early detection tool.

Thermography isn’t here to replace mammograms—but it’s an incredible complementary option, especially for women looking for safer, earlier, and more comfortable screening.

At Abundant Care and Wellness, we offer thermography 1-2x per month in office. We especially recommend this tool in women who have dense breast tissue, higher risk for breast cancer, have breast implants or mastectomies, are taking hormone replacement therapy, and women who want to avoid frequent radiation exposure.

Please visit ats.preventivethermography.com to learn more and apply for your grant from the United Breast Cancer Foundation- I recently did so and received $183 off my screening cost! Thermography is not covered by insurance, but the grants make it much more affordable.

Bras thermography is at our office quarterly on Fridays- they use heat sensing technology. We have been working together for a few years and they are fabulous! To schedule- give them a call- info at http://brasthermography.com/.

Advanced thermography is at our office 1-2 Fridays per month- you can self schedule on their website at ats.preventivethermography.com. Advanced thermography visualizes vascular changes in addition to heat for more advanced insight into your breast health.

Any questions on thermography- please post below! I am happy to answer as I am able!

Please note- thermography is a great screening tool for all types of inflammation- I will be posting more about its use for general screening in the future!

Lets talk about BIRTH CONTROL!

Too often, this is presented as the solution to all of our female health problems and we aren't being given the whole story.

A recent research article really dug into common risks associated with birth control, which are summarized below. And don't just take my word for it- full article attached in comments- as found on the NIH website.

1) Accelerated ovarian aging (think infertility, PCOS like symptoms, and early menopause with possible heightened risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and dementia)

2) Mental health issues including depression, anxiety, and increased su***de risk (especially in teens)

3) Sexual dysfunction and reduced libido

4) Elevated cardiovascular risk, such as stroke and blood clots

5) Higher cancer risks (notably breast and cervical)

6) Environmental impact from hormone pollution in waterways

There are some circumstances where benefit does outweigh risk, but I encourage you to think through alternative options that support our natural physiology (versus suppressing it).

Questions? I am happy to answer them as I'm able to. Please post below!

We are currently working on holistic programs to naturally address PCOS and support women in Perimenopause and Menopause through supporting your God given design.

I am excited to soon be formally announcing these- stay tuned!

The Neglected Heart: A Root Driver of Disease

Your car is out of gas. What do you do?
Does that seem like a silly question?
Then why are we treating our bodies, minds, and spirits so much worse than our cars?

I see this every day and I can be guilty of it as well. It looks like this: I don't respect my heart when it tries to let me know that it is running on empty. I keep pushing it- until there is nothing left. As a christian, my born again heart is the wellspring of life (Proverbs 4:23) but instead of nurturing and guarding my heart, I treat it as a nuisance, an impediment to my productivity! and attempt to silence it. The heart's cry is gentle and soft and I don't realize it feeds the rest of me until the waters run dry. And then my mind and body start to fall apart. And I don't stop until I literally have no other choice because I can't push myself anymore.

And often, the Father, in His grace, allows this to happen, so that we can be restored body, mind and soul. And restoration doesn't always look like full healing on earth- but it is a realignment and a refilling. And it's certainly not easy. But it's good.

We love working with people in seasons of transition. For new life to take root, for a new season to be fully embraced, the old must be cleared out. It takes courage. And a lot of us get to the point where we have no other option- and truly, that's a great place to be.

Please pray for us as we continue to seek wisdom from the Lord to create a place where people can find true freedom and healing.

We are so grateful for all of you; it's an honor to be a part of what the Lord is doing in your life!

This is a real life photo from my car- yes, I am one of those people that don't fill up until I absolutely have to!

Please join us in welcoming our new physician, Gayle May, MD!

Dr. Gayle has been in practice for 20 years as a hospitalist, and over the last 4-5 years has developed an interest in taking a more proactive approach with patients via functional medicine. He finally decided to take the leap and join us- and we are so thankful!

He is passionate about identifying and addressing root causes of disease with a holistic focus on nutrition, exercise, stress, sleep, and lifestyle. He is currently pursuing full certification through the Institute for Functional Medicine.

His life revolves around his faith in Jesus, he finds great joy in nature and visiting national parks, and if you attend the YMCA- you may have seen him in his second home- the sauna!

Fun fact- prior to becoming an MD, he was an electrical engineer and in childhood, loved playing chess. Solving complex problems has always been a part of his life- a great fit for functional medicine!

Dr. Gayle plans to practice general functional medicine, and will be taking on many of our mens health clients, as well. He takes BCBS. If you would like to get to know him, please join us for a Q&A on our page on July 10 at 10 am. This will also be recorded.

Great News!!
1) We are now able to take BCBS again. This will be the ONLY insurance we are able to take- but happy that we can offer this again! Thanks to our wonderful BCBS rep to help us make this happen and I know some of you must have been praying- so thank you also to all of our prayer warriors!!!

2) We are bringing on a physician this summer! Dr. Gayle May will be joining us in June. You can read more about him on our website at www.abundantcareandwellness.com and we will be formally announcing him soon. He will be starting very part time as he is still working another job and pursuing his functional medicine certification. We are currenty scheduling patients with Dr. May but spots are filling up quickly!

3) Jessica Powell and Karen Lehman are currently NOT able to accept new patients. Barb Herspring still has a few open appt spots later this summer- but they are also filling very quickly!

4) Karen Lehman plans to start offering a holistic weight loss program in August or September and Jessica Powell is developing a perimenopause/ menopause program so that she can accept more patients hopefully around the same time. We are both offering waitlists for these programs.
