🌿 Somatic Stress Management: Release Stress Through the Body 🌿

Did you know that stress isn’t just in your mind—it’s stored in your body too? Somatic stress management focuses on using movement, breathwork, and physical awareness to release built-up tension and restore balance.

Here are a few somatic practices to help you manage stress:
✨ Deep Breathing – Engage in slow, intentional breaths to activate your body’s relaxation response.
✨ Progressive Muscle Relaxation – Tense and release muscle groups to relieve physical tension. Start at your toes, working your way slowly to the top of you head.
✨ Grounding Exercises – Focus on physical sensations, like pressing your feet into the ground, to bring yourself into the present moment.
✨ Shaking It Out – Lightly shake your arms, legs, and body to release nervous system tension.
✨ Gentle Movement – Stretching, yoga, or even a short walk can help regulate stress.

These exercises help with boundary development, breathing, resetting our nervous system and retraining our bodies to cope with stress without feeling overwhelmed.

At Friesen Counseling, we incorporate somatic techniques into our therapy offerings to help clients process stress in a holistic way. Stay tuned for more tips, and reach out if you're interested in learning more!

… and the last recommendation of “12 books of Christmas” is “Untamed” by Glennon Doyle; an Elizabeth Friesen’s suggestion.

Glennon Doyle's Untamed is a raw, inspiring exploration of what it means to live authentically.
Packed with powerful insights and stories, it challenges you to break free from expectations and embrace your truest self—a must-read for anyone seeking freedom and empowerment!

On our #11 recommendation of “12 books of Christmas”, Jennifer Rose brings "Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion" by Gregory Boyle.

This is a deeply moving exploration of empathy, love, and resilience, drawn from Boyle's work with gang members in Los Angeles. Through heartfelt stories, he illustrates the power of unconditional compassion to heal even the deepest wounds, offering universal lessons about dignity, acceptance, and hope.
Therapists often recommend it because its themes align closely with the transformative goals of therapy: fostering connection, authenticity, and the belief in each person’s capacity for growth and change. It’s a book that inspires and uplifts, reminding readers of the profound impact of boundless love.

On our “12 books of Christmas” series, Ashley Callstrom would like to recommend the book “How to Winter” by Kari Leibowitz.

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, now is the perfect time to dive into How to Winter by Kari Leibowitz. This insightful book offers a fresh perspective on embracing the winter months with warmth and positivity.

Inspired by the surprising fact that countries in the Arctic, where the sun doesn’t rise for two months, don’t report a significantly higher incidence of seasonal affective disorder, the author explores the factors behind this resilience.

The subtitle says it all: “Harness your mindset to thrive on cold, dark, or difficult days!”
Whether you’re looking to boost your mood, stay active, or simply enjoy the beauty of the season, this book is a wonderful guide. Embrace the hygge spirit by cozying up with a cup of tea and let “How to Winter” transform your winter experience into a warm and comforting journey.

And if you’re not a “book person” or you want a shorter preview of the high points, check out the podcast “The Winter Mindset: How Norwegians Love the Winter (And You Can Too), available on Spotify.

“The Body Keeps The Score” by Bessel van der Kolk is today’s book recommendation, brought by Reyna Rodriguez Gillenwater; this is the #9 suggestion of our “12 Books of Christmas” series!

is a staple in self-help literature for a good reason; this book written in conjunction with scientists and researchers explores the importance of trauma and its effects on our brains and bodies. This book emphasizes why it is crucial for us to take care of ourselves and seek help in processing our issues so we can live to our fullest potentials.”
