As we enter the season of decorations, lights, and gift giving, please remember to keep button batteries and lithium coin batteries away from young children. Both types of batteries are circular, metallic, and small enough to swallow. They are also found in many household items. If ingested, they can cause burns to the esophagus or stomach or if put up the nose or in the ears, can cause burns there as well, leading to severe infection or damage.

Helpful tips:
- Know which items in your house use these batteries
- Keep items with these batteries out of reach of young children
- Talk with your children about safety
- Make sure the battery compartments are secure
- Post the number for the National Battery Ingestion Hotline (800-498-8666) with other emergency information in your home.

What to do if you suspect your child has ingested one of these batteries:

"If you have honey at home: Give 2 teaspoons of honey to a child who has ingested a button battery or lithium coin battery within the past 12 hours, as long as they are over age 12 months and can swallow liquids. You can give up to 6 doses of honey about 10 minutes apart. Do NOT give your child anything else to eat or drink. If your child vomits, do NOT offer another dose. Do NOT delay transport to hospital to obtain honey.

Take your child immediately to an emergency room!"

Read the article below for more information.

Small and useful, but dangerous if children get at them, button and lithium coin batteries are found in remotes, key fobs, thermometers, and many other devices found throughout the home. Here’s what parents need to know.

Cold and flu season can feel daunting, but remember - one of the easiest ways to protect yourself is to wash your hands frequently. The incidence of respiratory infections and GI illness is significantly decreased when you wash your hands often and well! Follow these guidelines and teach your children to do the same.
