The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates dietary supplements as foods, not drugs, so manufacturers are not required to provide ingredient information before selling them. Manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their products are safe and that labels are truthful. The FDA can remove unsafe products from the market, but this is a post-market action.

The manufacturer agreed to recalling just one of the products, but the FDA advises consumers and retailers against consuming or selling both products.

Today's parents of young children are mostly too young themselves to remember seeing the devastating toll polio takes on its victims. But just because polio is rarer now than before doesn't mean it's gone altogether, nor does it make polio any less dangerous an illness.

The FDA has announced a recall of 89,592 bottles of liquid children’s ibuprofen. The recall was initiated by the manufacturer, Strides Pharma, after the company received complaints describing a “gel-like mass and black particles” inside the medication.

The recall is a Class II, which is typically carried out at the retail level, meaning products are removed from store shelves rather than homes, unless further action is advised, according to the FDA.

Parents and caregivers are advised to avoid giving children the recalled medication. If a child may have already consumed the product, concerned caregivers should contact a health care provider.

The FDA has issued a nationwide recall of nearly 90,000 bottles of children’s ibuprofen after reports of contamination with foreign substances, including black particles and a gel-like mass.
