Wow - the human body does amazing things.

My body is not like most. The internet tells me my odd deformity will not shorten my lifespan, but it makes me different. It affected my breastfeeding experience, but what was truly unexpected was the way breastfeeding affected my most peculiar body. Why should you care? And why should I reveal now....

Today’s NYT article explains how the practice of routine electronic fetal monitoring goes against the best interests of mothers and babies. Other countries are following the evidence, while the persists in using EFM in ways that lead to more surgeries and complications. And to less human care during birth, as nurses are expected to be responsible for more patients and rely on EFM instead of face to face care.

Round-the-clock fetal monitoring leads to unnecessary C-sections. But it’s used in nearly every birth because of business and legal concerns, The Times found.

A message from Annette Bevan of based in Reading, Berkshire, United Kingdom. Annette and some of her teammates are advocates for letting fellow athletes both Grassroots & Professional that the game is not over for them at Motherhood. It’s only just beginning :

“Playing rugby doesn’t end when motherhood begins - if anything, it’s made me more resilient, more determined and more educated about the changes to my body and how I need to adapt my training. I’ve learnt to maximise my training time and have become the master of a superset. I’ve learnt to not be too proud to ask for help from my ‘village’ of family, friends, rugby club and teammates, who are legends for the support they provide on match days, on training nights and everything in between. And I’ve learnt you can literally push your body to do anything even if at one day postpartum you think you’ll never even be able to walk normally ever again.“

📣CALLING ALL MASSACHUSETTS DOULAS!

MassHealth anticipates that doula services for pregnant, birthing, and postpartum members will be covered beginning on December 8, 2023! More info coming soon…

In the meantime, for those of you who may be interested in applying to enroll as a MassHealth doula provider on or after the anticipated go-live date of December 8, 2023, MassHealth highly recommends that you do the following:

ACTION ITEM #1:

If you don’t have one already, apply for a National Provider Identifier (NPI) at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/. You’ll need to create an account, but the process is free. Doulas are required to have an NPI prior to applying to enroll as a MassHealth doula provider.

ACTION ITEM #2:

Register to attend MassHealth doula provider training! Completion of this free online training is required prior to applying to enroll as a MassHealth doula provider. The training is expected to take about 3 ½ hours including time for questions and answers. Topics covered will include an overview of the MassHealth doula program, the application and enrollment process, information about protecting patient privacy, record keeping requirements, checking member eligibility, submitting claims for payment, and other important information and resources.

There are currently 3 options for live trainings:
Option 1: December 8, 2023 at 9:00 AM
Option 2: December 14, 2023 at 1:00 PM
Option 3: January 4, 2024 at 9:00 AM

Register here: https://lnkd.in/ebtvwb3K

For those who cannot attend one of these live trainings, MassHealth anticipates making a self-guided recorded version available in January 2024.

Statue of a Nursing Woman

The nursing woman sits on the ground with one knee raised. Against the hammock of cloth formed by her skirt stretched over her knee she holds a child whose yellow skin indicates she is a girl. With one hand the woman holds the child’s head, while with the other she offers her breast to the child.

The child’s head is tilted back, either to gaze at the woman as nursing children may do, or perhaps in frustration as she cannot reach the breast. Behind the woman a red-painted and therefore male child kneels and pulls her second breast beneath her arm so that he can nurse, too.

Old Kingdom, 5th Dynasty, reign of Niuserre or later, ca. 2420-2389 BC or later. Painted limestone. Probably from Tomb of Nikauinpu, Memphite region, Giza. Now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 26.7.1405
