As mothers, we often share stories of our own experiences with our daughters, including those about menstruation. Many of us were taught to simply endure period pain, accepting it as an unavoidable part of growing up. However, it's crucial we empower the next generation with a different message.
While mild discomfort is common during a menstrual cycle, debilitating pain that interferes with daily life—causing a girl to miss school, withdraw from social activities, or be unable to function—is not normal. This level of pain can be a symptom of underlying medical conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, or fibroids, which are often dismissed or undiagnosed for years.
Pelvic floor therapy can be a key part of a comprehensive treatment plan. We teach holistic strategies to help manage pain, including stretches, breathing techniques, and exercises to relax the pelvic muscles. But we also guide, through the use of daily occupations (activities), what can help promote healing, mental wellness, connection, & participation in what's important to her. This isn't just about in-office treatment; it's about providing her with tools and strategies she can use every day.
Furthermore, pelvic floor therapists can collaborate with your daughter's medical providers, teachers, and coaches to ensure she has a wraparound support system. This collaborative approach helps minimize disruption to her daily life, from her academic performance to her participation in sports and social activities.
By listening to our daughters and validating their pain, we can encourage them to seek medical evaluation and explore effective, non-invasive care, like pelvic floor therapy. This proactive approach sets a precedent for a lifetime of self-advocacy and better health outcomes. We have a unique opportunity to change the narrative around period pain, replacing struggling with empowerment and informed care.
