On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the strength, resilience, and courage of Indigenous peoples.💗

We celebrate the vast contributions of Indigenous communities and their traditions and knowledge that continue to enrich our world today.

We also recognize the ongoing impacts of colonialism, historical trauma, and systemic inequities, which contribute to disparities in substance use rates and create barriers to treatment within Indigenous communities.

Take a moment today to learn about and honor the cultures of the people who first inhabited the land where you live. For example, Sussex County is the historical home of the Munsee Lenape people, who presently live in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario, Canada.

Hi! My name is Ava and I am a woman in long-term recovery and have had continuous abstinence since 1998. I serve as a Senior Counselor at the Center for Prevention and Counseling and became a license counselor in September 2005.

My professional and personal philosophy are rooted in a spiritual ideology. I view any addiction as a soul sickness …..being caught up in the fear of the future or regrets of the past and wanting to be numb to the present life experiences. Simply a longing to find the lost essence and the spirit you once were and are meant to be.

My personal journey reignited that spark behind my eyes, and awakened my being back to reality (the good and not so good). As a fellow journeyman once told me: “It is life on life’s terms” and having the resources/tools to cope with BEING. The tools in my life have included a mentor (sponsor), a sisterhood of recovered women, surrendering to the Divine (my version), looking at patterns that no longer serve me and knocking it off, identifying my values, and having my values be congruent with my actions (not perfectly…but trying daily). I had to clean up my side of the street of wrongdoings, I practice daily meditation and have a conversation with the Source (inside of me) every day and finally pass the message of HOPE on to OTHERS!

The HOPE has given me relationships that are emotionally deep and have helped me create heart connections with others. I feel FULL on the inside as a byproduct of my relationships with others, my higher power and myself. RECOVERY for me is a trifecta. WIN/WIN/WIN!!!!!

No more searching for external fixer-uppers. I learned recovery is an inside job but I cannot do it alone. My fear has softened and this “Little Light of Mine… SHINES, again!
