HE LOVED AN INDIAN MAID
So This Santa Fe Porter Deserted Wife at Newton

NEWTON, KAN - George Guest, employed as a porter by the Santa Fe at Newton, and who formerly resided in Hutchinson, is now in the Harvey county jail. And so is Elsie Daniels, an Indian maid, petite and comely. Guest, although married, could not withstand the charms of his Choctaw sweetheart and they eloped, the porter deserted his wife. SERIOUS ACCIDENT 1914

Roy Gilmore, Robert Dunn, And Ernest Bausman were injured Friday afternoon about 5 o'clock by being thrown from an automobile, while on their way from the Pete Smith place eight miles east of Newton, to Newton. Alver Gilmore who was in the automobile, was uninjured.

Yesterday afternoon while Roy Gilmore was operating a saw at the Smith farm he got his hand caught in a cog and the thumb was cut off. He wanted to come to Newton to have the injured hand dressed and the other three men started to town with him in a Ford machine. When they were within a couple of miles of the city on the First street road they decided on account of the bad condition of the road to go north to the next section line. Just after turning north at the Regier corner, a ditch has been washed in the road and when the machine struck this, the radius rods which control the steering, gave way and the machine made a sudden turn facing the opposite direction. The four men were thrown from the car. Alver Gilmore went out over the driver's head and lit on his feet and was not injured. He went to the Regier home and telephoned to the Axtell Hospital for medical aid which was answered by Dr. Grove who brought the injured men to the hospital. It was found that Roy Gilmore had a fractured clavicle on the left side; Robert Dunn, a dislocated elbow, bruises and cuts about the face, and Ernest Bausman two ribs and collarbone on the left side fractured. Gilmore and Bausman were able to go home but Dunn remained at the hospital. The Evening Kansan-Republican, Newton, Kansas. March 7, 1914. Page 1. DAMAGE BY HAIL

One of the worst hail and rain storms in the history of the country occurred yesterday between 3 and 5 o'clock p.m. south and west of Sedgwick City. Hail of large size fell, some reported that measured seven inches in circumference. Crops are badly damaged, and in some instances the small grain is ruined. About all windows on the south and west sides of the houses were broken. As near as we can ascertain, the territory affected is about two miles square. Special Dispatch from Sedgwick, KS to the Wichita Eagle. May 12, 1888. Page 1.

A PRISONER SKIPS. D.H. Maguire, the man who has been languishing in the Harvey County jail awaiting trial for stealing two sets of harness in this city, was brought down from Newton yesterday morning for trial. The case not being called he was allowed to remain in the court room under charge of Constable Robison, and upon the adjournment of court at noon stepped out into the crowd without being noticed by any of the officers, and walked out. The closest search thus far has failed to re-capture him. The Hutchinson Daily News, July 13, 1887.
