🐾Job Summary: The Spay/Neuter Surgery Assistant plays a key role in supporting high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgical procedures in a fast-paced, mission-driven nonprofit environment. This role includes assisting veterinarians, technicians, and other assistants with patient prep, monitoring, and recovery, while keeping a clean and efficient surgical workflow that prioritizes animal welfare.
➡️ Key Responsibilities:
- Help with pre-operative care including physical exams, animal handling, and surgical preparation (e.g., shaving, anesthetic induction, intubation).
- Monitor animals under anesthesia and during recovery, following all safety and comfort protocols.
- Clean, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments and equipment before, during, and after procedures.
- Handle and restrain dogs, cats, and occasionally feral or frightened animals safely and compassionately.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of surgery and prep areas.
- Administer medications as directed, including pain control and post-operative treatments.
- Communicate clearly and kindly with team members, volunteers, and the public.
- Uphold the organization's standards for humane, ethical, and professional animal care.
- Follow all safety, sanitation, and infection control protocols.
➡️ Qualifications:
- Prior experience in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter preferred; spay/neuter experience a plus.
- Strong animal handling skills and comfort working around all sizes and temperaments.
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, anesthesia monitoring, and sterilization protocols.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
- Flexibility, reliability, and a strong commitment to animal welfare.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; veterinary assistant certification or relevant training preferred.
