Happy Medicare Birthday! 🎉
On July 30, 1965, a landmark moment in American healthcare history occurred: President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law! It's incredible to think that former President Truman received the very first Medicare card, and in its first year, 19 million Americans signed up.
These programs were groundbreaking, providing essential health insurance options when they were desperately needed. Over the decades, they've continued to evolve, expanding coverage and benefits to millions. From President Nixon's expansion to cover long-term disabilities in '72, to prescription drug coverage under President Bush in 2003, and expanded preventive services under President Obama in 2010 – Medicare has consistently adapted to meet the nation's health needs.
Today, nearly 50 million Americans rely on Medicare for their health insurance coverage, and nearly 70 million through Medicaid.
