Chandler Hall is a non-profit Quaker-based continuing care senior living community in Newtown, PA, dedicated to helping our residents and their families navigate the Journey of Aging. Since 1973, Chandler Hall has provided high-quality care for older adults in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Founded as a 55-bed nursing home, Chandler Hall now offers a broad spectrum of services for individuals at all

stages of the aging process. It was a rare occasion here at Chandler Hall yesterday. The Newtown Rotary Club hosted its special meeting, featuring Merrill Reese, the voice of the Philadelphia Eagles. It was a sports fan's dream to hear about the Eagles, Jalen Hurts, and the Super Bowl champs and about his thoughts on the upcoming draft.

It’s National Volunteer Appreciation Week. We love our volunteers at Chandler Hall and can't thank them enough for the generous gift of your time and heart. We asked them the question: What have you gained from your experience as a volunteer?
These are the words from Bob Harell, a dedicated Hospice Volunteer.

Hospice volunteers are available to provide companionship to patients and support to their families. For example, one patient was confined to her bed at home and struggling with loneliness, so a volunteer was matched to visit her each week. They had long conversations about memories and children, listened to music, and viewed pictures of family and special life events. The visits became a weekly highlight for the patient, and her daughter said they really lifted her mom's spirits. The visits also provide the daughter relief from her caretaking duties, freeing her up to relax, run errands, and take time for herself. Overall, the family was grateful for the support, and the volunteer found the experience meaningful as a way to connect with a family facing a difficult time.

It’s National Volunteer Appreciation Week. We love our volunteers at Chandler Hall and can't thank them enough for the generous gift of your time and heart. We asked them the question: What have you gained from your experience as a volunteer?
These are the words from Bob Anderson, a dedicated Hospice Volunteer.

The Satisfying Selfishness of Hospice Volunteering

I have been a hospice volunteer for Chandler Hall since I retired in 2008. It has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my life.

When I meet a client and family members, I lightheartedly introduce myself by saying that I volunteer because I’m selfish. I then sincerely explain what a pleasure and a privilege it is to hear the stories of love and adventure and grace that have made each person’s life unique and meaningful and astonishing and what a gift and a joy it is to be with people who know that at the end of life it’s all about love and only love.

Dame Cecily Saunders founded the first modern hospice in London in 1967. This was her credo:

"You matter because you are you.
You matter to the very last moment of your life.
And we will do all we can
Not only to help you die peacefully
But to help you live until you die.”

Chandler Hall staff and volunteers embrace and enact that credo. At Chandler Hall, there is no judgment, only unconditional love. What more could anyone want?

The Instrument of Peace Prayer attributed to St. Francis of Assisi ends with these abiding truths:

“For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”

As I have said this prayer at the bedsides, I have realized that it is mutually true for me as well as the person I’m praying for. As I say, I’m selfish, wanting to be part of such a profoundly moving experience. But it's also true that in being selfish in this way, I find my truest and best self. Thanks be to God and thanks be to the clients who have shown me the way from selfishness to selflessness.

Thank you to our New Hope-Solebury High School and Villa Joseph Marie High School students, who participated in our first edition of the "Amazing Stories of Chandler Hall Residents" publication. We had 15 residents and 32 students participate in the program, which took 1 year to complete. They interviewed a resident, found an "amazing story" about their lives, and then collaborated with our editor, Jennifer Nelson, and their teachers. Thanks to Beverly Gowton, our Life Enrichment Director, for coordinating the project and the celebration party for the book printing revelation. John Whitman, the CEO who introduced the program to Chandler Hall, gave opening remarks and spoke of how proud he was of these students and our residents.
