True story: a patient that had leakage 💦 with running 🏃🏻‍♀️..

They gave her kegel after kegel after kegel but never addressed her core weakness, hip weakness nor did they WATCH HER RUN!

If you want to perform better during a task, we have to see you do that task! We need to teach the whole body how to work together.. not just throw a million kegels after it!

2 years of standard pelvic PT got this patient nowhere… 2 months of our care and she is much improved and running leak free!

Leakage is the symptom… it’s not the diagnosis. It’s our job as pelvic floor PT‘s to figure out why the symptoms is there, and what is causing the symptom.

common reason somebody might be leaking urine include:
- there is a prolapse/loss of bladder support
- weakness in the front of the pelvic floor, specifically around the urethra
- low estrogen in the urethral sub mucosal layer
- weakness elsewhere in the body which then puts too much pressure on the pelvic floor
- tightness in the pelvic floor resulting in nerve compression
- poor coordination of the pelvic floor, core, and diaphragm
- poor posture
- relative energy deficiency of the whole body

if your treatment for urinary leakage consist of Kegels, and only Kegels, you are missing a big piece of the puzzle

But the sad part, insurance only wants us pelvic PTs to teach you how to contract your pelvic floor. They don’t care about the why… they want a “quick fix” so they don’t have to keep paying. This is why it’s important to understand there are other options out there!

It’s common, but just because it’s common doesn’t mean it should be happening!

Pregnancy puts a lot of stress on our body- resulting in changes in muscles and ligaments… but that’s why pelvic floor PT should be part of every single person’s postpartum care team.

Leakage is never normal and is a sign that your body isn’t working the way it should.

So much sneakiness going on!!

This is not unique! Just because someone “takes your insurance” doesn’t mean that their service will be covered.. not only that, but their service will likely look completely different than if it was performed by someone that was out of network.

For PT, reimbursement rates are atrocious.
We wouldn’t be able to get quality therapists and give quality care.
Our environment would not be as comfortable, tranquil and cozy.
Our sessions wouldn’t be one:on:one for an hour.
We wouldn’t be able to look at you holistically but rather could only focus on one body party per day.

And to cap it all off, it might be WAY MORE expensive if you went in network, if you haven’t paid your deductible, have a high copay, coinsurance, or due to flat out rejection because your insurance refuses to pay..

It isn’t black and white- we are trying to break down as many barriers we can so that we can get put patients first and get them better, faster.
