It’s tricky to reach your back teeth when brushing. Even though it’s a bit more effort, it’s so important to brush your back teeth properly.

Make sure that you are using the correct size brush for your mouth. Try closing your mouth, and shifting your jaw to the side, to reach the cheek side of those back molars. That will give you a bit more room. You can also tilt the brush at a 45-degree angle to reach the very back surface of your last tooth.

You may find that an electric toothbrush helps you reach those difficult areas more easily.

It takes a bit of trial and error to find a method that works best for you.

Cold and flu season is here! Following these tips can help lessen their effects on your oral health.

- For colds and coughs that can cause dry mouth, drink lots of water and suck on sugar-free cough drops or candies. Sugary drinks or candies can create the perfect environment for cavity-causing bacteria, but making healthy choices may help you feel better.
- For the stomach flu, rinse with water after vomiting because stomach acids can eat away at tooth enamel. Wait 30 minutes after vomiting before brushing your teeth.
- Stick to a regular brushing and flossing routine while you are sick to help you feel better.

Knowing the cause of bad breath (or “halitosis”) is half the battle. We can often help patients find relief with treatment and advice. Causes of bad breath include poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, infections in the mouth, plaque buildup, diet, and some health conditions.

Practicing good oral hygiene can often end bad breath. Brush twice a day and floss to remove food particles from between the teeth. Brushing the tongue can also help.

For patients who suffer from a dry mouth, chewing sugar-free gum may help stimulate saliva production. Over-the-counter dry mouth treatments can also help.

Ask us for help with chronic bad breath. We can help determine the cause of the bad breath and recommend solutions to minimize odour.

Brushing at least twice a day is great, but flossing is important too! Flossing not only gets the little bits of food stuck between the teeth, but it also removes plaque from areas that toothbrushes can’t reach. Keep your teeth healthy by flossing every day!

Floss picks come in a variety of sizes and are easy to use one-handed. While they can’t be wrapped around the whole tooth surface, they’re useful for people with small mouths or dexterity issues, children who can’t manage a string of floss, or if you’re flossing for someone else.

Contouring and bonding can address gaps between your teeth, a rough tooth surface, a chipped tooth, or the shape of your teeth. These processes can even improve the health of your teeth by smoothing away crevices or overlaps where plaque can build up.

Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste leaves a layer of protection that continues to protect your teeth once you’re done brushing. Rinsing with water directly after brushing can wash away that protective layer. So if you’re thirsty, make sure to have a glass of water before you brush to allow the toothpaste to do its job!
