🦷 What happens to your teeth if you don’t replace a missing tooth with a crown or implant?

When a tooth is extracted or lost and you don’t replace it in time with an implant, crown, or bridge, your entire bite can gradually shift. Here’s how it happens:
1️⃣ Neighbouring teeth start to tilt.
The teeth next to the empty space begin to drift and tilt into the gap. This happens because teeth naturally want to stay in contact with each other for stability.
2️⃣ Opposing tooth moves out of position
The tooth that used to bite against the missing tooth (the antagonist) starts to grow longer — it “erupts” into the empty space because there is no opposing surface to stop it. This is called supraeruption.
3️⃣ Your bite becomes misaligned (malocclusion)
As teeth move, your bite changes. This can lead to:
✔ Uneven pressure on other teeth
✔ Tooth wear and chipping
✔ Jaw joint discomfort (TMJ issues)
✔ Difficulty chewing properly
4️⃣ Bone loss in the jaw

The bone where the tooth used to be no longer gets stimulated when you chew — so it gradually shrinks (bone resorption). The longer you wait, the more bone you lose, which can make future implant placement more complex or even impossible bone grafting.

5️⃣ Higher risk of decay and gum disease

When teeth shift and spaces open up, food gets trapped more easily. It becomes harder to clean your teeth properly, which increases the risk of cavities, gum inflammation, and even tooth loss.
