Considered a controversial figure in the history of dentistry, E.R. “Painless” Parker graduated from Philadelphia Dental College in 1892. At first, he struggled to get patients so he took his practice on the road, performing circus-like acts that mixed pageantry and dentistry. His name and reputation spread, helping him build a large conglomerate of dental offices throughout the western United States.

In 1944, Donald Gardner was teaching music to second graders at a public school in New York. When he asked his class what they wanted for Christmas, he was bombarded by lisped answers. Gardner noticed that many of his students were missing at least one of their front teeth, and realized this is what caused the lisping. He took this observation and wrote the Christmas classic “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth.”

Perhaps best known for being George Washington’s dentist, John Greenwood made a significant contribution to dentistry as an inventor. In 1790, Dr. Greenwood used a spinning wheel from a sewing machine to power a drill, so his hands would be free to keep working. This dental foot engine became an early predecessor to today’s modern foot pedals and inspired future dentists to implement strategies that kept their hands free.

In 1921 Congress passed the Snyder Act, which allocated federal money to fund health care for the Native American population. This was a crucial first step in bringing dental care to Inuit rural areas of Alaska and allowed dental professionals to travel, with their equipment, from village to village in remote Inuit lands where cases of oral disease were very common.
