Is your teen resilient?
Here's the first of ten questions to ask yourself:

ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS AS THEY RELATE TO YOUR TEEN IN THE PAST 3 MONTHS.

1= Never 2=Almost Never 3= Occasionally 4=Almost Always 5=Always

1.) My teen has a core group of consistent friends.
1 2 3 4 5

(Stable and reliable social connections are necessary for resilience. Having few friends may be a sign of either a less resilient “Weakened” or a “Rigid” Identity. Having even one good friend helps your teen grow to have a resilient “Compassionate Identity.”)

The best starting point to get a resilience building process going in your teen is to mobilize hidden strengths they are not aware they have. Let me show you how in the Facebook Live Wednesday, July 10 at 8:00 p.m. EST.

I've been asked to offer again the course for mothers of teens called, "My Resilient Teen." The world is spiralling out of control. We can raise our kids to be forces for real good in these historically troubled times. The truth is, we have no choice. To leave them to the forces of division, fear and anger that are so rampant would be a huge disservice.
Let me know what you'd like to see covered and let's get to work.

Exciting meeting of the Newtown Interfaith Council yesterday. We want to not only counteract the plague of division and conflict all around us, but to set in motion the best of our shared humanity.

So, building on experiences we've had since the tragedy, we're inviting members of the Newtown (and surrounding) community to be a part of a chain of loving kindness.

We'd like to see families and friends host a "Chain of Love" event at their home once (or more) over the next 6 months. Each Chain of Love event has 3 parts:
- A devotional that explores the positive elements of the world religions and stimulates the experience of the divine within and among the participants. This is to both develop the "spiritual muscles" of the group, but also to serve as a bulwark against prejudice and the use of religion as a force of conflict. The more we are educated about people and faiths different from our own, the less susceptible to prejudice we will be.
- An exercise and discussion around a theme of spiritual resilience to foritify us against the negative forces around us.
- FOOD! Sharing a meal, pot luck is best. Nothing says friends and neighbors better than a shared meal.

If you're interested (and you live in or around Newtown) in hosting a Chain of Love gathering at your home in the next 6 months, let me know. Also, if you have a date in mind, feel free to offer it.

The Newtown Interfaith Council is meeting again on Feb. 6 to get the party started.

How much of the suffering of others do we turn a blind eye to because of the politics?
If my child is hurt, I don't say to myself I shouldn't care because my other child is also hurt or that they have a history of not getting along. Can we have hearts big enough to simply have compassion on the suffering of innocents?

We had an interfaith vigil in Newtown for the people of Ukraine nearly 2 years ago. Understanding that there is so much suffering in the world that we'd have to have daily vigils to recognize everyone's suffering. But, can we lend an eye of compassion to the innocent in Gaza who are doubly victimized by poor leaders and by an indiscriminate foreign power led by a minority bent on their destruction?
Can we also have compassion on innocent Israelis who are also held hostage to a small clique of rapacious leaders and also a proximate enemy bent on their destruction?

We need new sorts of leaders. But first, we need our common humanity stirred. We need to be willing to bear the heartbreak of the loss of innocent lives anywhere and finally, finally, start acting as a united human family to shed once and for all the prejudices and outworn systems that keep us from peace.

LaGuardia is the opposite of what it used to be. It’s easy to get into, the terminals are easy to navigate and beautiful (live orchids in the restrooms), beautiful places to sit. Nice job!
