Child Advocacy Center of Niagara The Child Advocacy Center of Niagara is a child-friendly facility designed to coordinate services for child abuse/maltreatment victims in Niagara County

The Child Advocacy Center of Niagara provides a safe, neutral and child-friendly setting to respond to and investigate reports of child abuse and maltreatment, including children who have been witness to domestic violence. A multi-disciplinary team of law enforcement, social services, prosecution, medical and mental health personnel work together providing services and advocating for children and

their non offending care givers in an effort to reduce trauma and promote healing. The CAC also provides outreach and education services aimed towards the prevention of abuse.

1 in 9 youth experience online sexual exploitation. Preventing abuse means being vigilant about online safety, too.

- Encourage open communication with children, so they feel comfortable discussing any concerns or incidents they come across. Let your children know they can always talk to you.

- Talk to youth about not sharing n**e photos but also talk to them about how no one should ever ask for a n**e picture and by asking – this alone should be a red flag.

- Need a conversation starter – what would you do if someone ever threatened you online?

- Make sure children know they can always come to you, even if it’s in the middle of the night.

One of the most effective ways to prevent abuse is through open and honest communication. Caregivers have the job of creating safe and nurturing environments for children.

Open and honest communication =

- builds trust with a child
- empowers them with knowledge about boundaries and body safety
- more likely to disclose that something has happened to them
