There’s a prevalence of urinary incontinence of about 1 in 3 women between the ages of 30-50. The occurrence of men in the same age is about 5%. Although common it is not a normal part of aging.

There are 3 types of incontinence:
- Stress: involuntary loss of urine. Usually from weak muscles failing through an increase in intraabdominal pressure through laughing, sneezing, or coughing.

- Urgency: commonly from an overactive bladder where the muscles start to squeeze at an inappropriate time.

- Mixed: a combination of urge and stress incontinence

These changes are common after giving birth or surgery such as a prostectomy. Fortunately physical therapy can help lengthen and strengthen your pelvic floor muscles to help combat the issue.

An easy first step to try and help stress incontinence is called “The Knack”. Right before you sneeze, cough, or laugh, strongly contract pelvic floor muscles “up and in” which will provide you with increased counter pressure, hopefully stopping any urine from leaking. “A squeeze before a sneeze”

This is just one method for helping with UI. Reach out to Liberation Physical Therapy and schedule for a full pelvic floor muscle evaluation and screening for potential urinary irritants.

Hi there! I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and Liberation PT. My name is Dr. Robert Weymers and I live in East Lyme CT with my wife, 2 kids and a third on the way. I love fishing, baseball and hockey. Most importantly, I love helping others relieve pain and gain more normalcy in their lives. This passion has only grown and has led me down the road of opening my own Physical Therapy practice, Liberation Physical Therapy. It is located downtown Niantic, CT at The Mix.
Please visit my website to learn more about the practice, offerings and to schedule an appointment. I look forward to helping you.
