We recently were blessed to have a few hours at the beach!
Walking on the beach offers more than scenic beauty—it’s a multisensory experience with measurable physiological benefits. Beach walking supports mental and emotional wellness. Exposure to natural light stimulates the release of nitric oxide, which promotes vasodilation and may reduce blood pressure (Queirós & Freitas, 2019). The rhythmic sound of waves and the presence of negative ions—generated by ocean surf—have been shown to enhance mood and reduce stress by balancing serotonin levels and improving air quality (Jiang, Ma, & Ramachandran, 2018).
Walking barefoot in sand also facilitates “grounding,” a process where the body’s accumulated positive ions dissipate into the earth, potentially lowering inflammation and oxidative stress (Coastal Pharmacy & Wellness, 2023).
Altogether, beach walking is a gentle yet powerful practice that harmonizes movement, nature, and neurobiology.
