Ever wonder what a doula really brings to the birth room? Spoiler: it’s not just expertise 😉 We asked our doulas to name a few things they come fully loaded with, and here's what they said:

✨ Cooling towels you snap cold
✨ Straws for blow-up birth balls and drinks
✨ iPad for capturing every special moment
✨ Pocket full of alcohol pads to quickly help with nausea
✨ Hair ties for all the labor hair-ups
✨ Little baggies for jewelry if a cesarean becomes necessary
✨ Cross stitch to keep hands busy while she naps with an epidural

It’s the thoughtful, behind-the-scenes touches that help mamas feel supported, cared for, and just a little more comfortable 💜🌿

🌟 Team Spotlight: Emily Lemmon, Birth Doula, Serving Liberty and Surrounding Areas🌟

Born and raised in rural Casey County and one of ten children, Emily has a heart for supporting moms. When not on call, she works on an organic produce farm, creates simple birth flower paintings for the moms she supports, and goes on hiking adventures—especially if there’s a waterfall (or ice cream) at the end!

We’re so thankful to have Emily on the Hope’s Embrace team!💜

100 births. 100 moments of strength and love. We're so proud of Renee for reaching this incredible milestone—what a gift she is to the families she serves! 💜

"I never thought I would need a doula. I have recommended doulas on a regular basis to friends and to just about any pregnant woman I meet. But me? No, I’m good at birth! I’ve had two easy pregnancies and two relatively easy deliveries; I certainly don’t need any extra help. That’s how I felt going into my third pregnancy, until it became clear that this baby was not going to be easy. He was stubbornly breech and that left few options. I had been talking with Renee for my entire pregnancy as a friend and as a friend she talked me through my options for delivery and what a C-section (which is what I ultimately chose) would be like. She had offered to be my doula many times and I declined up until the very last minute and I am so thankful that I relented and invited her into my birth-space. I know people say why would you need a doula for a C-section because there isn’t a lot of hands-on work for them to do in that situation but having her calm presence in the operating room turned what otherwise could have been a traumatic experience into a mostly positive one. Little things like a hand squeeze at the right moment and her ability to remain calm in all situations made a huge difference for me. I fully expected to get to hold my son on the operating room table, but he did not transition well to the outside world. Renee was the one who told me, ever so gently, that my son was going to have to visit the NICU. That was one of the scariest moments of my life, but her calming presence ultimately enabled me to stay mostly calm. So no, I didn’t get the hip squeezes or back rubs or many of the physical things that I think of when I think of a doula’s work, but she gave me a really amazing gift of being able to stay calm in an incredibly scary situation and that allowed me to process what was happening in the moment and ultimately preserved my 3rd birthing experience. I truly believe that every mother needs a doula, and that’s why the work that Renee is doing with Hopes Embrace is so important." - Ellen
