I have openings for placenta clients the next few months!

Hey all! I’ve been a bit MIA lately but I wanted to make a quick post saying my messages are still always open if anyone needs anything or has questions.

I am also accepting placenta encapsulation clients from now until the foreseeable future and I am open to booking birth and postpartum clients after the new year☺️ Have a beautiful week!✨

How cool is this pottery dilation example?!✨

via instagram • @thelumpymug • “Cervical dilation in clay! I discovered a few years ago that when I was measuring my pots to make identical sized pieces I would check my pot like I would check a cervix. It was an extremely accurate way to measure for me and also hilarious to try and explain to my studio mates! After I made this little photo series I had my husband bust out the ruler to see how accurate my final measurement was… 10.16cm!! (Takes a bow)”

Will be semi-spontaneously camping with my family the rest of the week, so if you need anything please know we will have minimal tech time (and probably service), your patience is appreciated☺️

Have a great week!!

In the hospital it is usually encouraged that moms breastfeed every 2-3 hours to nourish the baby and bring in a good future milk supply.

It’s math: 8-12 feeds in 24 hours (ideal) = nursing every 2-3 hours 📚📈

It’s a quick and easy way to get the message across that this baby needs to eat, and often.

Unfortunately, new parents seem think breastfeeding is going to be like the first picture (cereal)...all the feeds perfectly spaced out and all the same size. Every 2-3 hours. Easy. And the baby will sleep like an angel in between....

THIS IS NOT REALITY. In reality, your sweet newborn baby will have good feeds, short feeds, sleepy feeds, crappy feeds, and everything in between!

The visual of the blueberries is amazing because it shows how realistically feedings are at all different times and different lengths (bigger blueberries ☺️). And did you count the berries?!? More than enough!

Yes, we want you to nurse every 2-3 hours, but the baby calls the shots. Less watching the clock ⏰ and more watching for feeding cues 👶🏻 😃

Love this!

Bartering has become such a lost art. I personally love to barter when it's possible to do so.
My husband needed help getting this swing set up. Just so happens that my client's husband does wood work and I bartered a one month service invoice in exchange for his help.
If you need help affording a doula, ask them if they barter. Maybe you have a skill that your doula could use.

This was such a special commission piece!! I was so honored with the trust. This is healing from birth trauma. Such a strong, inspirational mama and babies✨

Aka the "Get it done position." 💪🏽 Most of my clients know that I love using the toilet for labor. It's the best way to release a pelvic floor and help a baby descend into the pelvis. The contractions are super intense on the potty, but that's because they are super productive! Trust me when I tell you, this is one of the all time best labor positions!

🚽you are naturally prone to relaxing your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on the toilet.
🚽the bathroom is a place of privacy and solitude and you are used to relaxing in this room.
🚽you are using gravity
🚽you are opening your pelvis.
🚽you are allowing your baby lots of room to rotate and navigate the birth canal.
🚽you can also turn around and straddle the toilet with a pillow in front of you for comfort.

I call it the “dilation station” for a reason. I’ve encouraged many mommies to spend some time laboring on the toilet. It’s not uncommon for baby to come rather quickly after that 🤗

"I'm going to check you"
"I'm just going to break your water"
"We're going to start an IV antibiotic"
"You really need to do this right now"
“You’re not allowed to (walk around, eat, fill in the blank…)"

None of these are examples of informed consent.
Informed consent is a legal, human, and ethical right - established by law.

It’s a discussion that includes:
1️⃣ risks (including future potential risks, i.e. repeat cesareans, post-episiotomy pain, impacting sex life)
2️⃣ benefits
3️⃣ alternatives

Informed consent also includes the right to INFORMED REFUSAL.

That means you have a legal right to say NO at your birth to anything you believe is not in your and baby's best interest.

Your voice counts and what you say matters.

Being guilted into something or otherwise psychologically pressured is a violation of informed consent.

But violations are common and accepted. It’s common for a practitioner to say something like: ‘a good mom would do this’ and ‘you wouldn’t want to harm your baby’ or “I know this is what you want, but my job is to look out for your baby.” Legally YOU are the one who gets to choose for you and baby and LEGALLY that should be without repercussions to you regardless of outcome. YOU get to make the risk-benefit analysis, but that means getting educated ahead of time. And that’s what I’m here to help you do.

If you want to learn what your birth rights are, the difference between birth rights and hospital policy, and more on how to be your own advocate, I invite you to join my FREE #ideservebirthsupport pregnancy, birth, and postpartum course via the link in bio.

Once you join, you'll have access to the previously recorded videos (including the one on advocacy), in addition to supplemental PDFs and guided videos - and all of the ongoing classes coming up, plus the ongoing weekly support group.

Speaking up for ourselves, and speaking our truth makes a difference. It’s how every change in healthcare has actually occurred. And never doubt what s group of committed women can do!

My important reminder for the day!

When I bring up “the birth plan” people are either so excited to gush over very single detail of their dream experience, they’ve been thinking about this a lot! While others are more....wait what’s a birth plan? They don’t want or need that! Which is a great attitude to have because birth is beautifully unpredictable, you can’t dictate it.

BUT. The true power in the birth plan is not having a super strict laid out plan, but to learn and understand all of your options when it comes to your birth experience and even postpartum. I like to show clients a sample plan and lay out all the options and the thing I hear most (and LOVE hearing) is “wow that’s not even something I thought about or knew before!” But they do now✨

THAT’S where the power comes from.

Some orders going out today! Had the best little helper! I still have stickers left in stock if you want to snag one✨

⬆️Vertical Birth⬇️

It can be so easy or so complicated. It’s understanding the physiology that makes the most difference in outcome.
Less than 10% of women in the U.S. give birth in a standing and/or vertical position.
This is due to the large use of anesthesia, technology, fetal monitoring, interventions, convenience and the feeling of not having a choice in birthing positions.

𝘽𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙗𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙝:
👍🏼the need for pain medication decreases
👍🏼labour is shorter
👍🏼pelvic space is increased by up to 30% which aids natural descent and rotation of baby
👍🏼it’s the best position to aid physiological birth
👍🏼better blood flow to baby which decreases the chances of fetal distress
👍🏼decreases the need for emergency cesarean, episiotomy, vacuum or forceps
👍🏼less likely to need medical help
👍🏼helps aid the natural urge to bear down once you are fully dilated and effaced
👍🏼contractions are more effective
👍🏼gravity aids the progression of baby going down into the pelvis and out of the birth canal
👍🏼birthing parents overall satisfaction of the birth increases

💁🏽‍♀️Talk with your provider about birthing positions. If you’re provider is not comfortable or supportive of choosing an upright birth, it may be time to switch providers.

This is one of the many reasons people overlook the postpartum period.

People are forced to rush back to work, not even physically or mentally healed from their birth experience. Lacking sleep, rest, general self-care. Going through a huge life transition and that parental guilt of having to leave your babe so soon. Staying home any longer than a few weeks is made out to be a luxury. And it’s not. I am here to constantly (like get on your nerves constant!!) remind you that postpartum healing and support is an absolute NECESSITY.

Heal your body, build your village for support, rest, do things that make you feel grounded and happy, spend time with your family, eat nutritious meals, and plan ahead for the 4th trimester💛
